GSI Edges Rockets While Porcs, Souldiers, Groove Post Wins

TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders edged the Brockton Rockets by a single goal this past Saturday night to get within a half point of both the Rockets and the Parkdale Lads in the Regular Season standings. The Lads, meanwhile, dropped their fourth consecutive contest, this time falling to the streaking Wheatfield Souldiers under the iconic dome of Maple Leaf Gardens. The Parkdale Porcupines stayed within striking distance of the 1st place Souldiers, doubling up on the Humiliation with a score of 4-2. And the Safety First Jokers Hockey Club came up against a hot-handed Mario Pistone as the Dufferin Groove goaltender turned aside all 16 shots directed at him by the Funniest Team on Ice en route to a 3-0 victory.

Rockets GM Joseph Desjardins potted his first goal of the season just over a minute into the 2nd period of his team's 8:00 PM tilt with the Gas Station Isles, solving goaltender Nathan Cardon unassisted to give Brockton the lead. But GSI veteran Tim Vesely responded with his own first of the campaign before the period was over, converting a feed from John Pickernell to knot things up at one a piece. Then, early in the 3rd period, Stephen Boyd sprung Dominic Chartier for the only other goal of the game as GSI skated to their fourth win of the season.  The Isles (who enjoy a game in hand over six of the other seven teams in the league) will have three more opportunities to better their position in the Regular Season standings before the Playoffs commence on Saturday, Feb. 21.

The Wheatfield Souldiers managed to light the lamp on six separate occasions on Saturday night at Maple Leaf Gardens. Derek Domingos potted a pair to maintain his point-a-game status, while Mike Harkness, Kelly McCaig, Steve Harkness and Jimmy Murphy also scored. Goalie Sheldon Shurland earned his second shutout of the season while improving his league-leading Goals Against Average to a miserly 1.43 over seven games. The Souldiers have now won eight straight games, which is believed to be a record for the 15-year-old team.

Humiliation rookie Glenn Gummerson combined with Mike Thompson for his fourth goal of the season early in the opening frame of his team's Saturday night tilt with the Parkdale Porcupines. The lead was wiped out eight minutes later, though, as Corey Thorn and James Walker helped draw their side even at the 2:16 mark of the 1st period. Thorn and league scoring leader leading Adam Thrasher would net the lead for the Quills during the middle frame before Thompson got his squad back within one late in the 3rd. But Porcupines forward Todd Moffat would pot the unassisted empty-net goal with just 11 seconds left on the clock to set the win in stone and keep his team within a penalty-free victory of top spot in the standings.

Despite out-shooting the Groove 21-16 Saturday night at Upper Canada College, the Jokers came away from their exhibition contest empty handed, save for a half point garnered for going penalty free. (The team was actually assessed a minor for Too Many Men, however, UUHA rules stipulate that Too Many Men penalties do not count towards a team's PIMs in so far as the penalty-free half-point incentive in concerned.) Dufferin Groove goaltender Mario Pistone earned his second shutout of the season, while Bruce Freeman, Jason Aylsworth and Chris Dinsdale handled the goal scoring. With the loss the Jokers remained tied with the Humiliation for 3rd place in the Regular Season standings.

UUHA action continues next saturday, Jan. 25 with the Dufferin Groove facing off against the Parkdale POrcupines at 7:00 PM, the Beau's Beer Hack returning to action against the Parkdale Hockey Lads at 8:00 PM and the Wheatfield Souldiers going up against the Gas Station Islanders at 9:00 PM. All three of those games take place at Upper Canada College. Meanwhile, down at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Jokers and Humiliation will attempt to break their tie in the standings at 8:00 PM.
