Porcs Edge Humiliation for 1st While Rockets, GSI Post Wins

TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines are back in 1st Place in the overall league standings thanks to a 3-1 victory over the Humiliation this past Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Brockton Rockets moved from 6th to 4th place by bettering the Parkdale Lads 5-4, while the Gas Station Islanders found the back of the Safety First Jokers Hockey Club net five times en route to their third win of the season.

One storyline of the Rockets/Lads match was the Brockton squad's ability to capitalize on power-play opportunities created by three separate interference minors called on the Lads. Although only one of the winning side's five goals (Paul Shields' unassisted 2nd period marker) was officially registered as a power-play tally, two others were scored within seconds of the penalized player returning to the ice, before the Lads had time to reconfigure at full strength. Those were potted by Michael Wilcox (his second of the game) late in the opening frame, and by John Marshall with just over a minute remaining in the game. That last one stood up as the game winner. Ryan Olfert also scored for the Rockets (now 4-5-0), while Mike Frolick, Ryan Kalinka, Kyle Welton and Ian Seeton tallied for the Lads (3-5-1). The Lads have now dropped their last four consecutive games after starting the season with just one loss in their first five matches.

If any members of the the Jokers were unaware of Dominic Chartier's return to the GSI lineup they definitely aren't anymore. Chartier potted his fourth goal of the season to open scoring midway through the 1st period, then followed up with his fifth and sixth tallies to complete the hat-trick in the 3rd (his last goal being a short-handed marker, as well). The other two GSI goals were scored by rookie phenom Sean Dunn. Of the team's five goals, just one assist was handed out with Seth Singer collecting an apple on the opening goal. Jokers scoring was handled by Sean Cullen and Steve Levine, with Craig Hughson and Derek Thompson earning helpers.

The defeat was the Jokers' (3-3-2) most lopsided loss of the season having previously been edged by no more than a two-goal margin. Similarly, the win represented the most decisive victory for GSI (3-4-1) so far this season, having bettered an opponent by just two-goals prior to Saturday's game.

Humiliation captain Mike Thompson (with the help of Paul Morris and Kelly Dutton) got his side on the board early in this first meeting of the season with the Parkdale Porcupines - a match with top spot in the standings on the line in the event of a victory for either team. The Porcs' Adam Valente drew his side even in the 2nd frame, though, solving returning Humiliation goalie Luke Smit (in his first game back since an extended IR absence) by converting a play involving Corey Thorn and Todd Moffat. Porcs Elias vastis and Caitlin Thorn would provide the game winner and the insurance marker (respectively) in the final frame as the Quills skated to a penalty-free (for both teams, that is) victory and reclaimed 1st place in the process.

The UUHA returns to action this coming Saturday night with a pair of back-to-back games at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Jokers will attempt to get back in the win column when they take on the league-leading Porcupines at 8:00 PM, while the Beau's Beer Hack attempt to shake off their Gardens curse against the Humiliation at 9:00 PM. No league games are scheduled for Upper Canada College this coming Saturday due to a high school tournament. The UUHA will return to UCC the following Saturday, Nov. 29 for a full slate of matches at 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 PM.
