Lads, Jokers, GSI Defeat Morningstars, Porcupines, Souldiers

TORONTO - The Parkdale Hockey Lads bettered the visiting Morningstars 5-3 this past Saturday night in the first meeting between the two longstanding teams in years. Meanwhile, the Gas Station Islanders posted their second consecutive win, edging the Wheatfield Souldiers 2-1 on a late goal by rookie phenom Sean Dunn. And the Jokers defeated the Parkdale Porcupines 4-1 in a spirited contest that saw one ejection and a combined 17 minutes in penalties, 13 of which were accrued by the losing side.

The Morningstars' Josh Visser potted the game's opening lamplighter just over a minute into the action, combining with Stephen Stanley and Murray Cooke to beat Lads goaltender Luis Freitas high stick side. Lads forward Ian Seeton drew his side even before the period was done, though, collecting a feed from defenceman Nick Hehn and rushing in to slide one past veteran M'stars tender Mark Robinson. The 2nd frame saw the two teams trade a pair of goals each with Ryan Kalinka tallying twice for the Lads, while Cooke and Greg Thomas registered goals at the other end.

But it was the 3rd period that made the difference on the score sheet and in the Lads' favour. Hehn hooked up with Fil Freitas for the go-ahead goal at the 4:42 mark, then, with Robinson pulled for the extra attacker (leaving just one additional Morningstar on the pine, as the team was decidedly short-benched) Tom Nesbitt found the back of the vacant net with just 42 seconds remaining on the clock.

Team points leader, and current league goals leader, Adam Thrasher, potted the lone tally for the Porcupines as his side was bettered 4-1 by the Jokers in a feisty contest that saw a procession of (mostly Porcupines) players head to the sin bin, with two skaters leaving the game due to injury. Jokers scoring was lead by Charlie Rishor who completed a buzzer-beating hat-trick at the end of the 2nd period. Joel Lacoursiere netted the other Jokers goal, while Gary Rideout Jr., Sean Cullen (2) and Craig Hughson were credited with helpers. Elias Vastis and Ivan Kredl assisted on Thrasher's tally.

The night's final game saw little in the way of offence and, prior to a defensive Souldiers' cock-up capitalized upon in the last-minute by speedy GSI newcomer Sean Dunn, appeared headed for a 1-1 draw. Wheatfield Forward Kelly McCaig scored a fortuitous goal near the end of the opening period when a one-timer attempt (set up by Jimmy Murphy) caromed slowly off the heel of his stick to narrowly beat spare goaltender Louis Freitas, who appeared to have the intended shot well covered. GSI spare Yan Bounish drew the Isles even midway through the 2nd period, knocking down a fluttering puck while entering the Souldiers zone, then getting away an odd pitched shot up and over goaltender John Sutton. The game-winning goal came with just 47 second remaining in the game, when Dunn jumped on a loose puck in the Souldiers' zone after it was mishandled by the two defencemen who looked on as the blue-shirted winger waited out Sutton to bulge the twine.

UUHA action continues next Saturday, Oct. 25 with the Humiliation taking on the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 PM, the Beau's Beer Hack going up against the Parkdale Hockey Lads at 8:00 and the Dufferin Groove and Parkdale Porcupines renewing acquaintances in the final match of the night. All three games take place at Upper Canada College.
