Turkeys No More: GSI Gobbles Up 1st Win as Chartier Returns

TORONTO - Gas Station Islanders sniper Dominic Chartier made his return to UUHA action this past Saturday and the impact was almost immediate. After winning the opening face off back to defenceman Ryan Kalinka, Chartier collected the return pass at the blueline, deked two Brockton Rockets defenders and put the puck up and over the left shoulder of goaltender Chris Kourtis with just over 10 seconds elapsed in the game. Chartier had been sidelined for the first month of the 2014/15 UUHA Regular Season with a broken finger. During that time the Isles posted a 0-3 record and were outscored by a margin of 12 to 5.

The Rockets took little time to respond to the quick opening salvo, though, as team scoring leader James Neilson broke up a GSI passing play to rush in and beat goaltender Sean Markle unassisted, tying proceedings at 1-1. The 2nd period saw the Rockets open up a two-goal lead on tallies from Ryan Olfert and David Polson, but the Gassers narrowed the gap before the frame was closed as speedy spare Sean Bunn scored unassisted with just over a minute remaining.

The 3rd period belonged to GSI, though, as Steve Boyd teamed up with Bunn to pot the equalizer less than a minute in, followed a short time later by Chartier's second of the night - an unassisted short-handed marker. Nick Purdon provided the proverbial icing on the figurative cake, filling the empty net with just seven seconds left.

Though still in last place in the standings, the Isles currently sit just two points back of the Rockets with two games in hand.

In other UUHA games this past Saturday night, the streaking Wheatfield Souoldiers defeated the Humiliation 4-2, claiming their third consecutive win in the process. Aaron Knight and spare Hadley Carpenter tallied for the Humiliation, while Eric Toth, Derek Domingos and Keven Magura scored for the Souldiers. Domingos' goal was a late empty netter, while Magura's second goal stood up as the game-winner.

And the Beau's Beer Hack held on to down the Dufferin Groove 4-2, the last goal (potted by the game's First Star, Aaron Foster) being an empty netter, as well. Alex Lackovic and Derek Smith scored for the Groove, while the balance of Hack tallies were provided by Wade Ivan and Louis Durand, with Foster registering a pair.

UUHA action continues next Saturday, Oct. 18 with the Parkdale Porcupines facing off against the Safety First Jokers at 7:00 PM. The Parkdale Hockey Lads will renew acquaintances with the visiting Morningstars immediately afterward, while the Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers close out the night's programme at 9:00 PM. All three matches take place at Upper Canada College.
