TORONTO - The Parkdale Hockey Lads scored with 20 seconds remaining in the 3rd period to defeat the Safety First Jokers Hockey Club 4-3 this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. Meanwhile, the Brockton Rockets bounced back from last weekend's lopsided loss to shut out the Dufferin Groove 4-0, and the Parkdale Porcupines bettered the Beau's Beer Hack 3-1.
Team scoring leader Ian Seeton got the ball rolling for the Lads at the 4:30 mark of the opening frame, picking up a feed from defenceman Fernando Freitas and solving Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence on just one of two Lads shots in the period. But the Jokers' Joel Lacoursiere responded just over two minutes later, though, while Steve Levine put the Funniest Team on Ice ahead with mere seconds to go in the period. Sean Cullen, Derek Thonpson and Craig Hughson collected assists on the 1st period tallies. The 2nd frame ended with the two teams dead even as Dave Ball and veteran defenceman Nick Hehn scored for the Lads, while Takacs registered his second of the night.
Shortly thereafter the game's narrative would take on a controversial tone, though, beginning with a non-goal by the Lads. Defenceman Ryan Kalinka
wired a shot past Burke, which hit the crossbar with a clang and
caromed out into the slot. Certain the goal had gone in, the Lads raised
their arms in celebration, initially unaware both referees had waved
the goal off. The Jokers, meanwhile, collected the loose puch and headed
unchallenged down the ice toward the Lads net, where goalie Luis
Freitas was turned around taking a drink from his water bottle,
presumably prompted into inaction by his teammates' premature celebration. The Jokers scored easily on the unprepared netminder, yet the goal was waived off by the principal referee with the faceoff taking place at centre ice. Despite the controversial play and ensuing ruling, the Jokers limited their protest and returned to the action in sporting style.
Also of note was goaltender Freitas' outstanding performance which say him turn aside 32 of 36 Jokers attempts (including more than a couple of dingers off the posts). The 3rd period alone saw the Jokers register 18 shots. The Lads, by comparison, managed just 13 shots on net demonstrating a quality-over-quantity display of efficiency.
UUHA action continues next Saturday, Oct. 11 with the Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers returning to action after a weekend off for an ostensible rematch of last season's Championship Final. The following game (at 8:00 PM) has the Beau's Beer Hack up against the Dufferin Groove, while the final match of the night will see the 6th-place Brockton Rockets take on the 8th-place Gas Station Islanders (who, mind you, have two games in hand over both the Rockets and the 7th-place Hack). All three games take place at UCC.
