Humiliation, Porcupines, Rockets Earn Opening Night Wins

Home is where you hang your helmet: UCC's Eaton ice pad finally adds "Home" and "Visitor" designations to its benches, closing out a five-year tradition of on-the-fly pre-game decision making on the part of patron teams.

TORONTO - Brockton Rockets' forward Paul Shields scored the first goal of the 2014/15 UUHA Regular Season this past Saturday night, leading his team to a tightly-contested 4-3 win over reigning league Champions, the Wheatfield Souldiers. Michael Wilcox and team rookie Dustin Harris also tallied for the victorious side, the latter picking up a pair of goals for a share of the league scoring title. Derek Domingos, Eric Toth and Jimmy Murphy potted goals for the Souldiers who, despite finishing out of the win column, outshot their opponents 22-14. Shields' goal came just five minutes into the game and although the Souldiers kept it close, at no time did the Rockets relinquish the lead. Goaltender Nathan Cordon was solid in the Brockton net while counterpart Sheldon Shurland was sharp save for being subjected to a pair of unlucky trajectory-altering caroms off his own defencemen. The 5:30 PM game (played just eight days after the two teams met in a pre-season friendly at Maple Leaf Gardens) was contested on Upper Canada College's Olympic ice pad.

Later the same evening the Beau's Beer Hack and Jokers Hockey Club opened their respective seasons with a dramatic 3-3 tie that saw the Hack's Wade Ivan knot things up with less than a minute to go in the 3rd frame. The goal was Ivan's second of the match. Louis Durand also scored for the Beau's side. Jokers scoring was handled by Gary Rideout Jr., repatriated veteran Marc Hickox and defenceman Craig Hughson. Goaltenders Aaron Brophy and Burke Lawrence conspired to keep their teams unbeaten on the campaign.

A wedding-depleted Parkdale Porcupines bench didn't let the low numbers get them down as they rolled over the Gas Station Islanders by a score of 5-2. The two squads managed to keep pace with each other until the halfway point of the game, with youthful Ivan Kredl and speedy defenceman Adam Thrasher tallying for the Quills, matched by veteran Gasser Dylan Hudecki's pair of late 1st-period goals scored just a minute and four seconds apart. But the Porcs pulled away with a 2nd period marker from James Walker, who would match Hudecki's output late in the 3rd frame with an empty-netter. Thrasher would add another, as well, transforming the second half of the match into a lopsided affair.

That uneven trend continued onto the night's final match-up which pitted last season's Director's Trophy-winning Parkdale Hockey Lads against perennial Finals runners-up, the Humiliation. The latter squad (boasting a trio of new faces in Glenn Gunnerson, Andrew Blakely and Aaron Knight) got the early jump on the former, opening up a three-goal lead on just seven shots, including a pair of lamplighters resulting from picked-off passes by Blakely and Paul Morris. Jim Sioukas also tallied early. After another Sioukas goal and then Gunnerson's first, Lads blaster Ryan Kalinka finally got his side on the board, solving spare goaltender Marc Hickox with a hard shot to the short side. The final period would see two more Lads goals - one each from Mike Frolick and Simon Evers, but those were matched by Humiliation veterans Morris and Mike Thompson to extinguish any notion of a Parkdale comeback.

UUHA action continues this coming weekend with a special Friday evening game at Maple Leaf Gardens featuring the Lads and the Gas Station Islanders. The puck drops under the iconic dome at 8:00 PM. The following night will see the Humiliation go up agains the Dufferin Groove while the Brockton Rockets and Parkdale Porcupines each look to stay in the win column. The Wheatfield Souldiers and Beau's Beer Hack lock horns in the final match of the evening at 9:00 PM. All three Saturday night games take place at UCC.
