TORONTO - Veteran Humiliation forward Luke Moretti scored with just 19 seconds remaining to knock off the 1st-place Parkdale Hockey Lads in Game 2 of the teams' opening-round Playoff series. Meanwhile, the Porcupines, Wheatfield Souldiers and Beau's Beer Hack also advanced to the winners' bracket for Round 2 action, commencing next Saturday at Upper Canada College.

The Porcupines, who finished 2nd overall in the Regular Season standings, will now face the 8th-place Humiliation in a two-game, total-goals aggregate series. The Hack (3rd place) will go up against the 4th-place Souldiers in the other winners' bracket series. The winners of those two series will compete for the UUHA Championship cup in a single-game Final on Saturday, April 12.

Other 2nd-round Playoff action will see the Lads face off against the Gas Station Islanders while the Brockton Rockets go up against the Jokers. Game times for all 2nd-round matches are now up on the schedule page.

Series score: Wheatfield Souldiers 7 - Brockton Rockets 3

The Wheatfield Souldiers went into Game 2 of their two-game, total-goals aggregate series with a two-goal advantage over the Brockton Rockets (the score from Game 1 was 4-2 in the Souldiers' favour). Veteran forward Wes Gerbrandt opened the scoring at the 6:30 mark of the 1st period, jamming home a rebound off of a Derek Domingos shot to solve Rockets goalie Nathan Cardon. The game remained a one-goal affair until 6:31 of the 3rd frame at which point Eric Toth combined with Domingos and linemate Mike Harkness for a shorthanded tally, putting Burton's Boys up by a pair. Just over three minutes later Gerbrandt would spring on another rebound, this time off a pair of tries by linemates Jimmy Murphy and Brad Sveistrup, to register his first multiple-goal game in recent memory. Rockets Oliver Sutherns and Micheal Wilcox would capitalize on a goal-mouth scramble with a minute-and-a-half remaining in the game to spoil goaltender John Sutton's shutout bid, but the tally wouldn't be enough to make a difference in the outcome of the game or the series.

Series score: Beau's Beer Hack 6 - Jokers 3

Having tied 1-1 in the first match of their series, Game 2 represented all the marbles for the Hack and Jokers. Apparently Hack sniper Louis Durand got that memo first as he opened the scoring unassisted late in the opening frame, perhaps buoyed by a successful penalty kill. Aaron Foster followed suit shortly thereafter, converting a pass from George Stroumboulopoulous to solve goaltender Burke Lawrence and put the Hack up by a pair. Gary Rideout Jr. answered back for the Jokers, though, taking a pass from Joel Lacoursiere to halve the Hack's lead at the 9:00 minute mark of the 2nd period. Less than two minutes later, though, Durand combined with Neale Borutskie to re-fluff the cushion, only to have Jokers rookie Kyle Dooley remove its stuffing once more, this time with Mike Takacs as the set-up man. With the Hack taking a 1-goal game (and series) lead into the 3rd period, David Laverdiere's turn to bolster his squad's lead, teaming up with Stefan Barkley to successfully test Lawrence once more. Laverdiere would then feed Foster for the proverbial nail in the coffin as the Hack went on to 5-2 rout of the previous season's Champions. Absent from the Jokers lineup were defenceman Charlie Rishor and forward Steve Levine, both of whom (given their offensive contributions throughout the regular season) would likely have made a difference in the final score of the game, if not its outcome.

Series score: Parkdale Porcupines 12 - Gas Station Islanders 2

Having squandered a 2-0 lead early in the first match of their two-game, total-goals series vs. the Porcupines, the Islanders stepped onto the ice Saturday night facing the ominous task of overcoming a four-goal series deficit. By the end of the opening frame, though, that deficit had increased to five, with speedy Pines' forward Todd Moffat converting a pass from powerhouse blue-liner Adam Thrasher for a shorthanded tally. The pattern continued into the 2nd period, this time with Thrasher potting a power-play goal (assisted by Corey Thorn) at the 2:53 mark. Come the 3rd period it was all Porcs as Thrasher, James Walker (on the power play) and Lorne Kredl each registered unassisted tallies, while Moffat combined with Brian Bentley for his second goal of the night. Porcupines net minder Andrew Stirk earned the shutout in the contest turning aside 15 GSI attempts.

Series score: Humiliation 4 - Parkdale Lads 3

Had there not been seven days between games, the Parkdale Lads likely would've had some serious momentum heading into Game 2 of their series vs. the Humiliation, having fought back from a 3-0 deficit to put proceedings within a single tally. Instead, both teams were again each others' match as the first two periods of action saw neither squad register a goal despite some great chances at both ends of the ice. Barely a minute into the final frame, though, Lads rookie Ian Seeton collected a feed from Fabian Ruzic to finally solve Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit, drawing the Lads even in the series in the process. But with under two minutes to go in the game, and with offensive threat Mike Frolick out of commission due to a separated shoulder suffered the night before and thus watching from the Lads bench, and with Seeton in the sin bin serving an interference minor, the Humiliation power-play went to work, pinning the Lads down in their own end and wresting back the 3rd-period shots-on-goal lead from their previously pressing opponent. A Lads clearing attempt got as far as the blue line, but not out as defenceman Eric Partington corralled the puck and sidestepped a defender to get a clean shot away on net. Lads goaltender Louis Freitas stopped the shot but, in doing so, gave up a short rebound to the side of the goal where the puck was collected by Humiliation veteran Luke Moretti and sent into the back of the net for the game-tying - and ultimately series-winning - goal with just 19 seconds remaining on the clock. The final play saw little more than a scramble as the Humiliation successfully put one of their worst-ever regular season performance behind them to move on to the winners' bracket for Round 2 of the 2014 UUHA Playoffs.

UUHA Playoffs continue this coming Saturday, March 22 at Toronto's Upper Canada College.
