Jokers, Hack Tie While Souldiers, Porcs, Humiliation Earn Playoff Series Leads

A short-benched Gas Station Islanders squad discusses strategy in advance of Saturday night's Playoff tilt vs. the similarly short-benched Parkdale Porcupines. Combined, the teams had just 15 skaters dressed.

TORONTO - The Jokers and Beau's Beer Hack skated to a 1-1 tie in Game 1 of their two-game total-goals Playoff series this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. Meanwhile, the 8th-place Humiliation upset the 1st-place Parkdale Hockey Lads by a single-goal margin (3-2) while the Wheatfield Souldiers bettered the Brockton Rockets 4-2. And despite taking an early 2-0 lead in their game vs. the Parkdale Porcupines, the Gas Station Islanders allowed a half-dozen unanswered goals on their way to a 6-2 loss on the opening night of the 2014 UUHA Playoffs.

With the game still scoreless after two full periods, and the Jokers out-shooting their opponent 16-12, Hack forward Louis Durand corralled a feed from Chris Barkley to solve Jokers spare goaltender Trevor Coppen just 29 seconds into the final frame. Four minutes later, however, Jokers forward Paul Irving made good on a power-play set-up from linemate Steve Levine, getting the puck past Hack goalie Aaron Brophy to knot proceedings at 1-1. With no other scoring in the game, the teams will start the second and final contest of their two-game total-goal series with a blank slate. That match gets underway next Saturday at 8:00 PM at UCC.

The first half of Game 1 of the much-anticipated Lads vs. Humiliation series also saw no scoring from either side. That status changed late in the 2nd period, though, when Humiliation defenceman Eric Partington intercepted an offensive-zone clearing attempt and blistered a shot past partially-screened Lads goaltender Luis Freitas for a power-play tally at the 4:46 mark. Captain Mike Thompson doubled the lead a minute into the 3rd period, combining with talented rookie Jim Sioukas for a twine-bulger worthy of the highlight reel. Humiliation veteran Paul Morris then made it 3-0 by burying a feed from Luke Moretti. But with 6:41 remaining in the game, Lads forward Fabian Ruzic snapped a wrister past Luke Smit to erase any notion of a shutout bid (Jason Abrams assisted on the play). Then with under a minute to play, Veteran Lad Stu Muirhead benefited from being left unguarded in front of the Humiliation net to snap home a power-play set-up from Kyle Welton (Abrams also assisted on that goal). The teams will take to the ice at 10:00 PM next Saturday with the Humiliation up by a goal to start the series-deciding game.

The Wheatfield Souldiers drew figurative first blood in Game 1 of their two-game total-goals series vs. the Brockton Rockets this past Saturday night with forward Jon Weier converting a net-front feed from winger Scott Montgomery late in the opening period (centerman Kelly McCaig also assisted on the play). The Souldiers wouldn't relinquish the lead, either, potting another goal midway through the 2nd period (Mike Harkness from Eric Toth), before the Rockets' Michael Wilcox solved goaltender Mike Wilk to put the game back within one. (Oliver Sutherns and Joseph Desjardiins assisted on that tally.) But Souldiers forward Steve Harkness to reinstate the two-goal lead three minutes later, finishing off a three-way passing play with Toth and brother Mike to fill an open side behind Brockton goalie Nathan Cardon. McCaig bolstered the Souldiers' lead with five minutes left, collecting a pass from defenceman Joey Serlin. James Neilson would add another for the Rockets before the final horn sounded, though, making it 4-2 in favour of Burton's Boys. The teams will meet again next Saturday at 7:00 PM to settle the series.

It looked like an upset was well in the works as the 7th-place Gas Station Islanders maintained a 2-0 lead over the 2nd-place Parkdale Porcupines with less than 2:00 minutes remaining in the 2nd period. GSI rookie Michael Chipman has potted both goals for his side within the last minute of the opening frame, with Brian Nevin and Dominic Chartier collecting assists. But exhaustion (GSI managed to dress only seven skaters for the game, while the Porcs had just eight regulars on hand) exacerbated by a series of penalties likely figured into a stunning turn around that saw the Porcupines combine for six unanswered goals scored within the final 15 minutes of the game. Brian Bentley, Corey Thorn, Todd Moffat (2), Elias Vastis and James Walker all scored for the 'Pines who have set the table well for themselves in advance of the second and deciding game of the Playoff series. That game (which is expected to see the return of vacationing Porcupines goal-scoring phenom, Adam Thrasher) is scheduled for next Saturday, March 15 at 9:00 PM.
