TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers bettered the Gas Station Islanders 6-3 on Friday night in a rare match at McCormick Arena. The game (a rescheduled match originally intended to be played two weeks ago at Maple Leaf Gardens, but preempted due to Ryerson Rams programming) was the final contest of the 2013/14 UUHA Regular Season and several opening-round match-ups of the 2014 Playoffs (which commences tonight at Upper Canada College) were contingent on it's outcome.
Keven Magura, Mike Harkness (2), Chuck Molgat and Eric Toth (2) each tallied for the Souldiers, while Brian Nevin and Dominic Chartier (2) scored for GSI. The winning side outshot the opposition by a margin of 31 to 13.
With the win the Souldiers finished out the Regular Season with 15.5 points - good enough for 4th place overall and an opening-round engagement with the 5th-place Brockton Rockets. GSI picked up a half-point in Friday's contest (for putting in another penalty-free performance) which saw them close out the season with 12 points for a 7th place finish. Accordingly, the Gassers will now face the Parkdale Porcupines in the opening round of the Playoffs.
The other opening-round match-ups will see the 1st-place Parkdale Lads (23 pts.) take on the 8th-place Humiliation (10 pts.), while the 3rd-place Beau's Beer Hack (18.5 pts) go up against the 6th-place Jokers (14.5 pts.).
The opening round of the 2014 UHA Playoffs will be played this Saturday and next (March 15) and consists of four two-game, total-points aggregate series. Another four two-game, total-points aggregate series will comprise the second round of the Playoffs, with winners playing winners (from the opening round), and losers taking on losers. The two undefeated teams will then vie for the UUHA Championship Cup in the Gold Medal Game (April 12) while the remaining teams compete for Bronze and the Consolation Final.
