TORONTO - Brad Sveistrup and Mike Harkness potted a pair of goals each, and Eric Toth registered a three-point night as the Wheatfield Souldiers bounced back from an early two-goal deficit to hand the Dufferin Groove just their second loss of the season. The final score of the tightly-played contest was 6-2.

Groove spare Dave Volten got his side on the board first, solving Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland unassisted just four minutes into the 1st period. Steve Pilote followed up with another Groove goal less than five minutes later, assisted by Grant Stockwell and Todd Meaney on the play. But a mere minute-and-a-half into the 2nd frame, Brad Sveistrup shook off the jet lag of a recent flight home from Hawaii to knock in Jonny Weier's rebound and cut the deficit in half with a power-play tally. Shortly thereafter, Souldiers rookie Ryan Turner intercepted an errant Groove clearing attempt to solve goalie Chris Dinsdale unassisted. Then, with five minutes remaining in the period, Souldiers defenceman Chuck Molgat negated another clearing attempt, sidestepped an opponent and got the puck back to the front of the  Groove net where Toth and goal scorer Mike Harkness had at it for the lead. Toth struck again early in the 3rd, this time as the goalscorer, as he combined with Keven Magura and Scott Montgomery on the power play to make it 4-2 in the Souldiers favour. Sveistrup's second of the game, and Harkness's dying-seconds douce, rounded out the scoring on the night.

The Souldiers, who endured the slowest start in the team's 14-year history this season, have now lost just one game in their past seven contests. The team's next action comes against the streaking Parkdale Lads on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Upper Canada College.

Speaking of the Lads, veteran forward Tommy Gough potted his squad's first goal Saturday night to tie proceedings up 1-1 with the Gas Station Islanders (Isles' sniper Dominic Chartier had drawn figurative first blood just 25 seconds into the game). The goal, Gough's first of the season, also registered as his 100th career point as a Lad - yes, the team actually keeps detailed records of such things. According to facebook updates, Gough was showered with gifts following the match, which the 1st place Lads went on to win by a score of 5-2. Lads rookie Ian Seeton potted a pair of goals, while Mike Ryan and league scoring leader Kyle Welton picked up the others. Ryan, Nick Hehn, Fil Freitas, Fernando Freitas (2) and Mike Frolick earned assists on the various goals. Meanwhile, at the other end of the ice, Chartier scored the second goal for the Gassers (he now has nine goals in just six games), while Paul Braunstein (2) and Stephen Boyd were credited with helpers.

In other UUHA action, the Brockton Rockets shut out the Humiliation 4-0, with Michael Wilcox collecting his fifth and sixth goals of the season. That ties him with forward Kiryl Nikifarau (who also registered a goal Saturday night) for the team lead in scoring. Oliver Sutherns was the other Rockets goal scorer on the night, while assists were credited to James Neilson, Ian St. Aubin (2), Sutherns (2) and Wilcox, as well. Goaltender Chris Kouris faced down 16 shots for the shutout - his second in his last two starts with the Rockets.

And, in an unusual 10:00 PM exhibition contest, the Parkdale Porcupines were shut out by the mixed-squad Screamin' Jays to the tune of 3-0. Souldiers forward Eric Toth (2) and Jokers defenceman Craig Hughson combined for the Jays' goals, while assists were supplied by Sean Cordner, Brockton Rockets d-man Jason Pilling, Souldiers captain Chuck Molgat, Sean Cullen of the Jokers and Beau's Beer Hack's David Laverdiere. Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit turned aside 21 shots for the shutout.

UUHA action resumes next Saturday, Jan. 18 with Parkdale Porcupines facing off against the Jokers at 7:00 PM followed by the Beau's Beer Hack taking on the Parkdale Hockey Lads at 8:00 PM. The Gas Station Islanders and Humiliation will try to improve their respective spots in the standings when the evening's final match gets underway at 9:00 PM. All games will take place at Upper Canada College's well-appointed William B. Wilder Arena in Toronto's tony Forest Hill neighbourhood.
