TORONTO - There seems to be no stopping the Parkdale Hockey Lads. At least that was the lament going around the otherwise cheery Brockton Rockets dressing room following this past Saturday night's razor-thin loss to the top team in the UUHA Regular Season standings. The Lads scored two goals in the 1st period, and another in the final frame to defeat their fellow West-end denizens by a score of 3-2.

League scoring leader Kyle Welton's two-goal performance was good enough to claim 1st Star honours, while teammate Ryan Kalinka opened the scoring early in the game by capitalizing on a giveaway by Rockets goaltender Nathan Cardon. Tom Nesbitt was the only Lad credited with an assist on the night, as he provided the feed for Welton's second marker. The Brockton side's scoring was shared by Michael Wilcox and James Neilson, with Dave Dobson serving as set-up man on both tallies.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day the Wheatfield Souldiers and Beau's Beer Hack skated to a 1-1 draw in a special 5:00 PM matinee match. Mike Harkness scored unassisted for Burton's Boys midway through the 2nd period, while Hack forward George Stroumboulopoulos saucered to linemate Chris Barkley to tie proceedings up with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Barring a potential Winter Classic meeting between the two teams, the tie earned the Hack the advantage in the two-game season series with the Souldiers, as the Beau's Brigade claimed victory in the opening volley a couple of months back.

In addition to earning a big win Saturday night, the Jokers also claimed the distinction of being the the first UUHA team to defeat the Dufferin Groove this season, posting a 3-1 victory over the tenacious exhibition squad. Tyler Stewart potted his third and fourth goals of the season while Charlie Rishor registered an empty-netter in the dying seconds of the match. Steve Levine, Marc Hickox (2), Rishor and Gary Rideout Jr. collected assists. And although Tim Freeman's fourth goal of the season wasn't enough to maintain the Groove's unbeaten streak, it was good for a share of the team's points leader distinction, which Freeman now splits with Jeremy Wilton.

And in other UUHA action Saturday night, the Parkdale Porcupines defeated the Humiliation 3-1 in a penalty-filled affair that saw the two teams combine for a season-high 29 minutes of sin-bin time (mind you, two of those PIMs were the result of a Too Many Men infraction leveled against the Humiliation and, according to league policy, won't count towards a team's total. Also, for those keeping score at home, the odd number was the result of a Charging major issued against Porcupines rookie Jay Browne). Porcs forward James Walker opened the scoring early in the 1st period, converting a feed from Chris Valente to beat goaltender Marc Hickox (on loan from the Jokers), while the next two Quills tallies came off the stick of defenceman Adam Thrasher. (D partner Geoff McPeek collected an assist on Thrasher's second, while the first was potted unassisted.) Meanwhile, Luke Moretti scored the lone goal for the Humiliation, combining with Mike Thompson and spare blue-liner Rodney Merchant (on loan from the Souldiers) late in the middle frame.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, July 11 with the 1st place Lads taking on the 7th place Gas Station Islanders at 7:00 PM in a game pitting rival snipers Welton and Dominic Chartier against one another. The Souldiers and Groove are scheduled to renew acquaintances at 8:00 PM, while the Rockets and Humiliation face off in the evening's 9:00 PM game. The night will be capped off with a special 10:00 PM contest featuring the Parkdale Porcupines vs. a mixed exhibition squad comprised of various players from the UUHA and beyond. All games take place at Upper Canada College's esteemed William B. Wilder Arena.
