Gardens Party Yields Upsets, Stellar Performances by Smit, Chartier

Goalie Luke Smit posted a shutout in his first game back since missing action with a lower-body injury as the Humiliation beat the Parkdale Hockey Lads 3-0 this past Saturday afternoon at Maple Leaf Gardens. The loss was particularly frustrating for the Lads as they outshot the Humiliation 21-10. (photo: Mike Ivall)

TORONTO - UUHA Day at Maple Leaf Gardens yielded some surprising upsets, as well as a goaltending clinic and a Sittler-like offensive performance from one of the league's most renowned goalscorers.

After a relatively slow start to the season (following an initial absence) Gas Station Islanders forward Dominic Chartier returned to Richard-like form on the last Saturday of the UUHA's 2013 Regular Season schedule, scoring a natural hat-trick in the 1st period of GSI's match vs. the Parkdale Porcupines, then adding two more tallies in the game's final frame. Chartier also collected an assist on Islander rookie Brian Nevin's first-ever UUHA goal, as the Gassers went on to spank the unusually flat Porcupines 8-3 under the iconic dome of the Gardens. Pim van der Toorn and Paul Braunstein also scored for GSI, while James Walker, Jay Browne and Ivan Kredl provided the Pines goal scoring, the latter as a result of a successful 3rd period penalty shot.

The Porcupines weren't the only team seemingly jinxed by the Gardens voodoo, either. The Beau's Beer Hack, who had effectively dismantled the Brockton Rockets the previous Saturday, was dealt it's first shut-out loss of the season by the very team they rolled over seven days prior at Upper Canada College by a score of 6-1. This time out it was the Rockets' turn to roll, defeating the Hack 4-0 and collecting just their third win of the season in the process. On five separate occasions the Hack tempted the Rockets with some early Christmas presents in the form of numeric advantage, which the Brockton side graciously accepted by potting a pair of power-play tallies, one each by Oliver Sutherns and Rockets scoring leader Kiryl Nikifarau. The same two players each potted regular-strength goals, as well, while goaltender Chris Kourtis was credited with the shutout.

Given the teams' relative positions in the standings, the Humiliation's 3-0 victory over the Parkdale Hockey Lads registered as yet another upset win among the day's contests, not to mention the Lads out-shot their longtime rivals by a margin of 21-10. Indeed, goaltender Luke Smit was brilliant in his long-awaited return to action (out with a lower-body injury, Smit had not backstopped the Humiliation since the team's Sept. 14 loss to the Beau's Beer Hack). But the young tender's goose egg wasn't entirely responsible for the win, as three different players tallied for the winning side in three different periods. First to get the Orange Tide on the board was Stephen Cribbin, who combined with fellow team veterans Mike Thompson and Luke Moretti for a picture-perfect three-on-one tic-tac-toe play. Next up was Humiliation newcomer Jim Sionkas, who converted a pass from Thompson to solve Lads goalie Luis Freitas with a hard shot along the ice. Paul Morris - who scored the Humiliation's lone goal at their previous Maple Leaf Gardens outing - provided some insurance in the late goings of the game, collecting the puck from defenceman Duncan Bunclark for an empty-net marker.

And The Jokers Hockey Club improved to .500 by handing the Wheatfield Souldiers their first loss in five games. Jokers regulars Steve Levine and Ted Bisaillion potted the first two goals of the game (the latter being a particularly sweet top-corner deflection of a Sean Cullen shot) while spare player Kyle Dooley netted an empty-net goal with mere seconds remaining in the match. Forward Mike Harkness registered the lone goal for the Souldiers, combining with Ryan Turner and Derek Domingos to make a game of it early in the 3rd period.

The UUHA returns from its Christmas and Yule Log break (congratulations to Yule Log VI Champions the Big Stars of Bethlehem!) this Saturday, July 4 with four games on the slate at Upper Canada College. The Wheatfield Souldiers (3-5-2) will attempt to avenge their previous loss to the first-place Beau's Beer Hack (5-3-2) at 5:00 PM, while the Humiliation (2-5-3) will attempt to extricate themselves from the basement of the standings at 7:00 PM when they take on the tie-averse Parkdale Porcupines (6-3-0). The second-place Parkdale Hockey Lads (4-2-3) go up against the Brockton Rockets (3-4-3) at 8:00 PM, while the final game of the night sees the Jokers (4-4-2) take on the still undefeated Dufferin Groove (3-0-3) in exhibition play. That game gets underway at 9:00 PM.
