Souldiers, Hack Post Wins While Humiliation, Jokers Register 3-3 Tie

Humiliation captain Mike Thompson prepares for his team's game versus the Jokers Hockey Club this past Saturday night. The rematch of last season's Championship Final saw the rival squads skate to a 3-3 tie.

TORONTO - The Humiliation and Jokers Hockey Club tied 3-3 this past Saturday night while the Brockton Rockets succumbed to a second-half offensive torrent by the red-hot Beau's Beer Hack. Earlier in the evening, the Wheatfield Souldiers extended their undefeated streak to four games, defeating a short-benched Gas Station Islanders side by a score of 5-2.

Souldiers forward Steve Harkness opened the scoring at the 9:02 mark of the first period, combining with brother Mike Harkness and linemate Scott Montgomery to solve GSI netminder Sean Markle. The Harkness bros. would strike again eight minutes later, this time co-converting a point shot from defenceman Chuck Molgat. Montgomery would register the next unanswered goal for the Souldiers, followed by Jimmy Murphy and Derek Domingos. (Mike Harkness, Molgat and Domingos split the assists on those tallies.) But with just a minute-and-a-half remaining in the game, GSI spare Brent Jay would streak down the bench-side boards and deposit a hard, on-ice shot just inside the far post behind goalie Sheldon Shurland to spoil the shutout attempt. Then, with mere seconds remaining on the clock, Jay intercepted a mishandled puck in the Gassers' end to get a step on the Souldiers' blueliners and skate in for an unopposed shot on net that was ruled to have successfully crossed the goal line.

In addition to getting the win, the Souldiers posted their highest shot total of the season with 29 registered attempts. Contrarily, the Islanders recorded their lowest shot total of the season - but also their highest successful shot percentage - testing Shurland on just four occasions. That GSI managed to pot a couple of goals so late in the game was noteworthy given the fact the team played the entire game with just six skaters. And as one of the six was a non-roster spare, according to UUHA rules the team technically defaulted the game by failing to meet the minimum compliment of roster players by the opening face-off. However, at least a couple of other GSI regulars were expected to show up at some point having been delayed by heavy snowfall and inherent traffic woes.

Apparently several members of the Jokers Hockey Club own four-wheel-drive vehicles as the team had no apparent issues with weather-waylaid players. The Humiliation also managed to field a decent number of skaters, mind you at least two of the nine (UUHA newcomer Doug Millson and Souldiers regular Rodney Merchant) were spares. But it was another relative newcomer to the Orange Tide's side, Jim Sioukas, who opened the game's scoring, solving Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence after picking up a feed from linemate Stephen Cribbin just a minute or so into the 1st period. Jokers sniper Steve Levine answered back in short order, though, bulging the twine behind goalie Aaron Brophy (on loan from the Beau's Beer Hack) to tie proceedings at 1-1. Eric Partington would put the Humiliation back on top before period's end, finishing off a play involving Sioukas. Despite a pair of 2nd period power-play opportunities for the Humiliation, no further scoring transpired until the final frame which saw Jokers Mike Takacs and Craig Hughson find the back of the net, along with Humiliation veteran Paul Morris. Hughson's goal (assisted by Takacs) would serve as the game-tying tally. Sean Cullen and Ted Bisaillion earned helpers on Takacs' goal, while Cribbin and Humiliation captain Mike Thompson were credited with assists on Morris' goal.

The Beau's Beer Hack racked up their third straight win Saturday night, this time over the struggling Brockton Rockets, who have just one win in their last five games. The Hack's Aaron Foster struck first, beating goaltender Kanivir Singh unassisted at the 9:45 mark of the 1st period. Louis Durand followed suit four-and-a-half minutes later, picking the puck up off of goaltender Aaron Brophy and skating it in for the two-goal lead. The Rockets' Oliver Sutherns managed to staunch the bleeding a minute later, though, combining with Michael Wilcox and Rob Campbell to beat Brophy and get their side back into the game. A 2nd period power-play marker by Foster (assisted by Durand and Tim Bolen) gave the Hack back it's two-goal lead, though, as the squad continued to add stuffing to its cushion. Durand, Bolen and Chris Barkley would all tally in the second half of the game as the Hack went on to defeat the Brockton Boys 6-1 and (thanks to the additional half point for putting in a penalty-free performance) lay exclusive claim to 1st place overall in the UUHA standings. (Incidentally Foster, Blake McDonald, Wade Ivan and Durand picked up assists on the final three Hack goals).

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Dec. 21 with all eight full-time teams taking to the ice at historic Maple Leaf Gardens. The Gardens party kicks off at 4:00 PM with the Gas Station Islanders (1-5-3) going up against the Parkdale Porcupines (6-2-0), followed by the season's first meeting between longtime rivals the Humiliation (1-5-3) and the Parkdale Hockey Lads (4-1-3) at 5:00 PM. The Jokers (3-4-2) and Wheatfield Souldiers (3-4-2) clash next at 6:00 PM while the evening's card wraps up with a rematch of this past Saturday's tilt between the Brockton Rockets (2-4-3) and Beau's Beer Hack (5-2-2). All players are encouraged to join their league-mates after their respective contests directly across Carleton Street at Mick E Fynn's where the UUHA has reserved the semi-private back room for the occasion. Mick E Fynn's has graciously extended food and drink discounts for all UUHA players and cohorts. Kids are welcome, too. The UUHA encourages anyone planning to imbibe next Saturday to take advantage of the Gardens' excellent proximity to public transit, including the College/Carleton streetcar route and - even handier - the College subway station mere steps away.
