Kalinka Hat-Trick Lands Lads Claim of 1st Place in Leage Standings

In keeping with arcane team tradition, goaltender Luis Freitas performs a prescient pre-game dance Saturday in the Lads dressing room. The team defeated the Porcupines 3-1 to claim 1st Place in the standings.

TORONTO - When the Parkdale Hockey Lads finished out the opening month of the 2013/14 UUHA Regular Season in the top spot in the standings, some league watchers were skeptically happy for the oft struggling squad. With the team's 3-1 defeat of the surging Parkdale Porcupines this past Saturday night, though, whatever skepticism may have remained out there has metamorphosized into good old fashioned respect.

Perhaps surprisingly, it wasn't league scoring leader Kyle Welton notching a hat-trick (a natural one, at that) for the winning side, either. Rather, it was hard-nosed blueliner Ryan Kalinka finding the back of the Porcupines net on three separate occasions, the first two coming a mere 25 seconds apart as the Lads erased a one-goal deficit on the first shift of the 2nd period, then stunned the Porcs by capturing the lead in almost Mosienko-like fashion.

Mike Frolick assisted on both goals while Stuart Muirhead and Jason Abrams were also credited with helpers on Kalinka's first two tallies. Midway through the 1st period it was James Walker opening the game's scoring for the Porcupines with linemates Elias Vastis and Chris Valente assisting.

The Porcupines may have been a bit over anxious midway through the game's final frame as a Lads penalty afforded the 1st place squad a golden opportunity to draw even. Instead, it was the shorthanded team that took advantage of the offensive pressure to spring Kalinka beyond the opposing defenceman and in on the breakaway to pot the insurance marker. Welton and Tom Nesbitt were credited with corralling and quickly moving the puck up to the game's 1st Star who, as it turned out, had been cycling through the Lads' forward lines all game as the 11th skater.

According to the UUHA's web site standings, despite being tied with the Lads at 12 points, the Porcupines maintain the top spot overall by virtue of number of wins. However, both of the Porcs' losses this season have come at the gloved hands of the Lads. So in terms of head-to-head play (which, according to UUHA rules, is the primary determinant in the event of a tie) the Lads' standard currently edges that of the Quills at the summit of league standings.

In other UUHA action this past Saturday night, the Beau's Beer Hack tore their exhibition opposition a new Meat hole, defeating the spare-laden Meat by a score of 9-3. Hack forward Aaron Foster enjoyed a 5-point night while Chris Barkley potted a hat-trick for the victorious side. In all, seven different Hack players registered multiple points in the game. On the Meat side of things, Ryan Ross, Kyle Welton and Chuck Molgat each managed to solve Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy.

Meanwhile, the Brockton Rockets and Dufferin Groove skated to 1-1 tie in a game even shorter on penalties than scoring (neither squad incurred so much as a minor). Brockton's Paul Shields scored unassisted for his side late in the 2nd period, while Jeremy Wilton was fed by Groover Bruce Freeman in the dying seconds of the game to avoid the L column. With the tie Brockton maintains 4th place in league standings with a 2-3-3 record. The Groove, meanwhile, boast a defeat-free record of 3-0-3.

UUHA Regular Season action continues next Saturday, Dec. 14 with the Wheatfield Souldiers returning to action against the Gas Station Islanders at 7:00 PM, while the Hack goes up against the Rockets immediately afterward. The 9:00 PM contest will see the Jokers and Humiliation take to the ice for their second meeting of the season. The two teams last met on Sept. 7 with the Funniest Team on Ice shutting out the Orange Tide 2-0. All games take place at Upper Canada College's sufficiently chilly William B. Wilder Arena.
