Third Period Goalsplosion Sees Porcupines Prick Jokers 5-2

1-2-3... GET WELL GREG! Members of the Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers conduct a cooperative pre-game crease chant in honour of colleague Greg Millson. Currently convalescing at home after a week in hospital, Millson was baddly hurt last week in an apparent assault and mugging near Bloor and Ossington.

TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines defeated the Jokers Hockey Club 5-2 this past Saturday night to maintain a lock on 1st place in league standings. Meanwhile, the Brockton Rockets bettered the Gas Station Islanders 4-1 while the Wheatfield Souldiers edged the Humiliation 3-2 for the team's second victory of the season.

A trio of goals scored within three minutes early in the 3rd period made the difference in a hard-fought 7:00 PM contest between the 1st-place Porcupines and the (then) third-place Jokers Hockey Club, as the streaking Quills held on defeat the Funniest Team on Ice 5-2.

Mike Takacs and Charlie Rishor put the Jokers on top by a pair early in the 1st period, with Derek Thompson, Paul Irving and Sean Cullen assisting. But that lead was soon whittled away, first with a tally by Brian Bentley (set up by Jay Browne and Porcs' spare Corey Thorn), then with an unassisted goal from Thorn. The 2nd frame witnessed no scoring, but the Porcupines' sticks came to life in a big way early in the 3rd, starting with a Browne tally at the 12:30 mark. That goal was assisted by Ben Turner, who also provided the hard, knee-high shot acrobatically redirected by Adam Thrasher in front of Jokers goalie Burke Lawrence for the Porcupine's fourth goal just 43 seconds later. Then, on the very next shift, Elias Vastis combined with Porcs' leading scorer Todd Moffat and defenceman Matt Latreille to solve Lawrence with another goal - the team's fifth unanswered tally of the game.

Porcupines goaltender Andrew Stirk faced just a dozen shots over three periods, while Lawrence was tested 26 times.

Shots on net were few and far between at both ends in the 8:00 PM UUHA match between the struggling Gas Station Islanders and resilient Brockton Rockets, with neither team testing the opposing tender more than a dozen times. But it was Brockton's Kanivir Singh who prevailed over counterpart Sean Markle, turning aside all but one of GSI's attempts, that being an unassisted twine-bulger from Dominic Chartier potted at the 6:50 mark of the opening frame. Chartier's goal (his first of the season) saw GSI draw even with the Rockets, who has opened the scoring exactly four minutes earlier when Michael Wilcox converted a passing play with Ian St. Aubin and Oliver Sutherns. Wilcox would strike again in the 2nd period, again combining with Sutherns to put the Brockton Boys on top by one. At 4:06 of the 3rd period it was Sutherns' turn to score his first of the season. Paul Shields would collect the assist on that tally, as would St. Aubin who followed up with an empty-netter in the dying seconds of a match that was far closer than the score would ultimately suggest.

Incidentally, both teams picked up half-point bonuses for accruing no penalties - a feat which would appear to already be old hat for GSI as the team has gone penalty-free in five of its seven games thus far this season. Despite a record of just 1-4-2, GSI currently sits in 5th place in league standings, a mere half point behind the Jokers and just a point back of 3rd-place Brockton.

Speaking of standings, Saturday's 9:00 PM game between the Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers served as an erstwhile battle of the basement, as the two teams with the fewest points took to the ice determined to make less of a mess of their respective linens than their opponent. The game started on a sombre note as both teams gathered at centre ice to perform a cooperative crease chant in honour of team mate Greg Millson who was badly hurt the previous week after an apparent assault and mugging near Bloor and Ossignton. (Millson, who is expected to make a full recovery, has played routinely for both the Souldiers and Humiliation.)

Souldiers Eric Toth and Ryan Turner both scored late in the 1st period to get their team up by a pair going into the 2nd. Steve Harkness, Mike Wilk (2) and Keven Magura earned assists on the plays. But midway through the 2nd period tenacious Humiliation veteran Stephen Cribbin dug the puck out of the Souldiers corner and delivered it onto the unchecked, net-front stick of Mike Thompson who one-timed it past goalie Sheldon Shurland. Mike Harkness would renegotiate some insurance for the Souldiers at the 7:21 mark of the 3rd period (with Toth and Steve Harkness assisting). However, the Humiliation was not done yet as Thompson found Luke Moretti near the net to put the Orange Tide back within one with just 1:43 left on the clock. But despite some frantic action with goaltender Matt Barber on the Humiliation bench for the extra attacker, the Souldiers managed to hang on for just their second victory of the season, flip flopping with the Humiliation near the bottom of the standings in the process.

The two teams meet again for the second half of a home-and-away series this coming Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:00 PM. The night's following game will see the Beau's Beer Hack return to action vs. the Jokers, while the 9:00 PM contest pits the Parkdale Hockey Lads against the Gas Station Islanders. All games take place on the storied campus of Upper Canada College.
