Quadroscoria: Welton's 4-Goal Effort Helps Lads Reign O'er Jokers

Goaltender Luis "Peix" Freitas stands tall in the Parkdale Hockey Lads' crease as his teammates attempt to unlock a 3rd period tie. The Lads would do so minutes later, defeating the Jokers Hockey Club 5-4.

TORONTO - Lads forward Kyle Welton potted four of his team's five goals as the streaking Parkdale squad bettered the Jokers Hockey Club with a late tally this past Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers came back from a two-goal deficit to tie the Brockton Rockets 2-2, while the Dufferin Groove blanked the Gas Station Islanders 4-0.

Defenceman Nick Hehn solved Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence for the Lads' other goal, establishing a personal scoring streak of two games in the process. Mike Takacs, Steve Levine, Gary Rideout Jr. and Charlie Rishor each tallied for the losing side, while Tyler Stewart, Ted Bisaillion, Levine and Rideout (2) were credited with assists. Tommy Gough, Ron Sherkin, Mike Frolick, Dave Ball, Fabian Ruzic and Ryan Kalinka all picked up helpers for the winning side. Both goaltenders were kept busy at their respective ends of the rink, too: Lawrence faced 24 shots, while Lads' net master Luis Freitas stared down 28 vulcanized rubber bullets.

Brockton Rockets import Kiryl Nikifarau opened the scoring early in his team's match with the Wheatfield Souldiers, converted a pass from Joseph Desjardins to beat goalie Sheldon Shurland less than a minute into the 1st period. Ian St. Aubin would double the Rockets' lead five minutes later, finishing off a rink-length play involving Brett Linott and goalie Nathan Cardon. But that would be it for scoring from the Brockton side. The Souldiers, however, were far from finished, as defenceman Keven Magura let rip with a waist-high blast from the point that bulged the twine just below Cardon's catcher early in the 2nd frame. Still trailing by one and with just over a minute remaining in the game, Burton's Boys would pull Shurland for the extra attacker and the gambit would pay dividends as Jimmy Murphy found Jon Weier in front of the Rockets net for the knotting goal. No more scoring would transpire and the teams shook hands on a 2-2 draw.

The Gas Station Islanders welcomed back Dominic Chartier and George Collins - the former having been working out of country since shortly after the team's season opener, and the latter having been marooned on the island of Fogo, seemingly since time immemorial (this was Collins first game of the season). Like all other players on both teams' rosters, though, neither Collins nor Chartier were able to find the back of the net for the duration of the first two periods of play. That changed early in the 3rd, though, when the Dufferin Groove's Oliver Jimenez combined with Dave McBride to solve goaltender Sean Markle at the 12:00 minute mark of the period. Bruce Freeman, James McCudden and Chris Dinsdale would also score for the Groove (with McCudden, Tim Freeman and Jeremy Wilton picking up assists) as the exhibition squad went on to shut out the Gassers 4-0. Goaltender Mario Pistone earned his first shutout of the season improving his Save Percentage to .965 while posting an impressively frugal 0.75 Goals Against Average.

UUHA action resumes Saturday, Nov. 16 with the Jokers taking on the 1st-place Parkdale Porcupines at 7:00 PM, followed by a match featuring the Gas Station Islanders and the Brockton Rockets. The 9:00 PM contest will see the Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers take to the ice for the first of two back-to-back games. All three matches take place at Upper Canada College's well-appointed William B. Wilder Arena.
