Souldiers Fire Blanks, Porcupines Claim Top Spot in Standings

Wheatfield Souldiers forward Jimmy Murphy admires the Zamboni driver's work prior to his team's contest with the Parkdale Porcupines. Despite the clean ice surface, Murphy and his teammates would fail to score any goals.

TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines bettered the Wheatfield Souldiers 2-0 this past Saturday night to lay claim to sole possession of first place in the overall league standings. Meanwhile, in other UUHA action, the Jokers and Dufferin Groove tied 1-1, while the visiting CCCP equaled the Gas Station Islanders 3-3.

Porcupines rookie Ivan Kredl opened the scoring in the team's fifth contest of the season, finishing off a passing play with regulars Chris Valente and Elias Vastis to solve goaltender Mike Wilk just a minute and a half into the 2nd period. Todd Moffat would later combine with Adam Thrasher on the power play to pot the former's fifth goal of the season midway through the 3rd. Wilk faced 25 shots in total while his counterpart at the other end of the rink, spare goalie Brandt Kelloway, was tested 20 times en route to the shutout.

The win affords the Porcupines (4-1-0) top spot in the UUHA standings with 8 points - a full point ahead of the Jokers (3-1-1) and a point-and-a-half up on the Lads (2-0-2). The Lads, however, enjoy a game in hand having played just 4 times thus far this season.

Speaking of the Jokers, the team managed to get back in the points column Saturday night, but likely not to the extent they would have preferred. Along with their opponent, the Dufferin Groove, neither team was able to bury the biscuit until the 3rd period of their 8:00 PM exhibition contest. It was the Jokers who struck first, though, as Steve Levine combined with Gary Rideout Jr. and Craig Hughson to coax the puck past Groove goaltender Mario Pistone and into the net. Despite their short bench, though, the Groove would take advantage of a power play late in the period as Jeremy Wilton spoiled Burke Lawrence's shutout attempt with just over a minute remaining. Groove spare Brett Barnes picked up the assist on the goal which would serve as the game's final tally. Final score: 1-1.

The Gas Station Islanders played host to the visiting CCCP as the two teams renewed rivalries dating back to pre-UUHA days. GSI alumnus Diana Olson was also dressed for the contest, along with a number of familiar-looking spares on the CCCP bench including former Humiliation regular Paul Aucoin and Jokers Charlie Rishor and Craig Hughson. Rishor's presence would provide a significant edge to the red-shirted side, scoring both the second and third goals for the squad, while having another goal negated after a controversial off-side call. Kevin Rellinger also scored for CCCP, while Janet Morassutti, Luke Salomons and Jeff Watson collected assists on the night. GSI's Seth Singer and Cam Collyer (2) emerged as their team's goal scorers, with Collyer's second tally (potted with just 1:16 remaining in the game) standing up as the game-tying goal.

UUHA action resumed next Saturday, Nov. 3 with the Humiliation looking for their first win against the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 PM. The Parkdale Hockey Lads will attempt to regain 1st place in the standings when they go up against the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 PM, while the Beau's Beer Hack take on the Porcupines an hour later. All three games take place on the Eaton Rink at venerable Upper Canada College.
