TORONTO - The Parkdale Lads and Beau's Beer Hack skated to a 2-2 draw this past Saturday night, while the Wheatfied Souldiers claimed their first victory of the season, upsetting the Jokers 3-2. In other UUHA action, the Brockton Rockets collected their first win of the campaign, as well, defeating the Gas Station Islanders 3-1 at Upper Canada College. And the Parkdale Porcupines bettered the Humiliation 4-1 under the iconic dome of Maple Leaf Gardens.
The afternoon contest between the Porcupines and Humiliation witnessed one of the highest, and most one-sided shots-on-net totals in UUHA history as the brown-shirted Parkdale squad assaulted spare goaltender Matt Barber with an NRA-worthy magazine of 35 rubber bullets, including 17 shots in the 1st period alone. Despite the barrage, though, Barber allowed just three goals (the fourth Porc's tally was an empty net buzzer beater potted on the team's 36th shot on net) and was awarded the game's 2nd Star honours for his considerable efforts. Pines' forward Todd Moffat accounted for two of his side's goals, while Ben Turner netted the other pair. Adam Thrasher, Elias Vastis (2), James Walker (2), Geoff McPeek and Chris and Adam Valente assisted on the various goals.
The lone Humiliation tally transpired with just five seconds remaining in the 2nd frame when Thrasher attempted an ill-advised up-the-middle clearing pass mere inches from his side's left goalpost. Barely free of his stick, the puck caromed off the skate of opposing forward Paul Morris and directly into the Porcupines net. Morris was credited with the goal which improved the Humiliation's season scoring total by 100 per cent.
The win improved the Porcupines' record to 3-1-0, while the Humiliation slipped to 0-4-1.
Veteran Wheatfield Souldiers defenceman Mike Wilk registered his first-ever regular season goal at the 9:15 mark of the 2nd period in his team's 7:00 PM match against the surging Jokers Hockey Club. Although Wilk has tallied in past playoffs and various mixed-squad tournaments and matches over the years, the lanky and likeable blueliner claims to have never before scored a regular-season goal in a Souldiers uniform. His wasn't the only back treated to some monkey removal on Saturday night, either, as Burton's Boys went on to claim their inaugural victory of the new season (which isn't even that new anymore), and at the expense of the previously unbeaten and (then) 1st place Jokers, to boot.
A tight match until the final buzzer, Jokers defenceman Charlie Rishor equaled Wilk's work four minutes after the fact, taking advantage of a screening Mike Takacs to power a rising point blast past goaltender John Sutton on the power play. Jokers leading scorer Gary Rideout Jr. would make it 2-1 midway through the 3rd period, corralling a feed from Steve Levine and sending a hard shot along the ice and into the back of the Souldiers net. But Keven Magura answered back a minute-and-a-half later, registering a successful power-play point shot of his own. The next shift saw Souldiers centreman Jimmy Murphy combine with Derek Domingos for what would stand up as the game-winning goal.
Steve Harkness, Sutton and Eric Toth were credited with the other assists for the Souldiers (1-3-0), while Rideout picked up a helper for the Jokers (3-1-0).
Anyone expecting the Brockton Rockets to turn in a rusty performance following a scheduled three-week break was in for a surprise Saturday night. The formerly winless expansion squad wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in their 8:00 PM contest vs. the Gas Station Islanders as forward Kiryl Nikifarau teamed up with Paul Shields to beat goaltender Graham Walsh just 45 seconds into the opening frame. Michael Wilcox made it 2-0 midway through the 2nd period, before veteran GSI forward Tim Vesely scored unassisted to get his side back within one. But the Rockets' Ian St. Aubin cashed in with an insurance marker at the 6:20 mark of the 3rd, securing his team's first win and improving the Rockets' record to 1-2-1. With the loss, GSI is now courting an identical regular-season record.
The unbeaten Parkdale Lads' bid to remain that way appeared in jeopardy midway through the 3rd period of the team's 9:00 PM bout with the Beau's Beer Hack, as the latter squad's David Laverdiere solved goaltender Luis Freitas to put the Hack up 2-0 with fewer than seven minutes remaining on the clock. (Hack forward Aaron Foster had potted his team's first goal mere seconds into the game.) The Lads' chances improved, however, just three minutes later when Mark Duquette and Jason Abrams combined with the team's leading scorer Kyle Welton to beat Hack goalie Aaron Brophy and draw with one. Fifty seconds later Welton went it alone, intercepting a Hack pass to skate in unmolested and get a clear shot away at Brophy. That initial effort was repelled by the minder, with Welton crumpling in a heap behind the net. But with the closest defender still breaking back over the blue line, Welton quickly got to his feet, corralled the lose rebound and wrapped the puck around and behind the surprised tender, knotting proceedings up with his league-leading ninth goal and a mere 2:10 left to play. A pair of Hack penalties incurred a minute later afforded the Lads a glorious opportunity to put a cherry on the come-from-behind effort, but Brophy ensured the Parkdalians would settle for a hard-fought tie.
Louis Durand, Wade Ivan and Stefan Barkley were credited with assists on the Hack goals.
With the tie (and an additional half point for registering a penalty-free game) the Lads captured 1st place in the overall UUHA standings, remained unbeaten and improved their record to 2-0-2. The Hack - who would have captured 1st place had they hung on for the win - saw their record slip to 2-1-2, which is still good enough for a three-way share of 2nd place.
UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Oct. 26 with the Gas Station Islanders hosting CCCP for a 7:00 PM exhbition contest at UCC. The Jokers will try to climb back into top spot immediately thereafter when they face off against the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 PM. And the final event of the night will feature the Parkdale Porcupines taking on the Wheatfield Souldiers for the teams' first meeting since last season's Consolation Final.
