Perfect Starts: Jokers, Porcs Maintain Streaks Heading Into October

The Jokers' Bonne Fête Line of (left to right) Tyler Stewart, Mike Takacs and Gary Rideout Jr. combined for three points in Saturday's 2-0 win. Birthday boy Stewart scored the game's first goal to claim 2nd-Star honours.

TORONTO - The Jokers Hockey Club skated off the ice with a perfect 3-0 record this past Saturday night, after defeating the Brockton Rockets 2-0 to hand the expansion franchise its second scoreless loss of the season. Meanwhile, the Parkdale Porcupines downed the Beau's Beer Hack to the tune of 4-1 to stay perfect in the standings as well.

Jokers forward Tyler Stewart opened the scoring at the 5:14 mark of the 1st period, making good on a third attempt at Rockets goaltender Nathan Cordon, who was caught out of position having just turned aside shots from Gary Rideout Jr. and Sean Cullen (the latter of which witnessed Stewart's goal - and ensuing celebrating - from a crumpled head against the end boards). All three Jokers players collected points on the play. Midway through the 2nd frame it would be Mike Takacs bulging the twine behind the Rockets keeper, one-timing a nifty slot pass from Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion. Goaltender Burke Lawrence (who set a new UUHA record by successfully maintaining a birthday hat atop his helmet for the entire game) stopped 18 Rockets shots to collect his second shutout of the young season. Lawrence currently boasts a Goals Against Average of 1.00 and a deity-like save percentage of .954 over three games.

The second contest of the night saw the Parkdale Porcupines taking on the Beau's Beer Hack with both squads featuring rookie goaltenders called up for their UUHA debuts. Andrew Stirk strapped on the pads for the Porcupines, while Edison Wai manned the crease for the Hack. Stirk would face a couple more 1st-period shots than his counterpart, however, it was Wai who was subjected to a series of early lamp lighters as the Porcs jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 4:00 minutes into the game (Chris Valente and Todd Moffat scored, while Moffat, Brian Bentley and Jay Browne (2) collected helpers). Hacker Blake McDonald would solve Stirk unassisted to cut the lead in half shortly thereafter, but defenceman Adam Thrasher (assisted by Browne and Moffat) would find the net to restore the Porcs' lead before period's end. Moffat's unassisted second tally early in the 2nd period would prove to be the final goal scored in the match. The Hack now head into October nursing a 1-1-1 record in their inaugural UUHA season.

The final game of the night saw the Gas Station Islanders pick up their first win of the season, albeit at the expense of the struggling Humiliation. The final score of the contest was a meagre 1-0 despite the fact both sides combined for the evening's highest shot count at 49 attempts (GSI registered 23 tries on goaltender Luis Freitas - on loan from the Parkdale Lads - while the Humiliation peppered Sean Markle with no fewer than 26 rubber bullets). The lone goal of the game transpired just under a minute into the 3rd period when GSI spare Brian Nevin skated in a feed from rookie Paul Braunstein with spare Gabe Hogan off for hooking. The tally was GSI's first shorthanded goal of the season scored, coincidentally, while the team served its first penalty of the season.

The UUHA will observe an off weekend coming as Upper Canada College plays host to a high school tournament. League action returns on Saturday, Oct. 5 with the perfect Parkdale Porcupines (2-0-0) taking on the unbeaten Parkdale Hockey Lads (1-0-1) at 7:00 PM. The winless Wheafield Souldiers (0-2-0) go up against the Beau's Beer Hack (1-1-1) at 8:00 PM, while the 9:00 PM contest will see the offensively-hamstrung Humiliation (0-3-0) attempt to quench their scoreless drought vs. the Dufferin Groove (1-0-0).
