Rockets, Lads Skate to 3-3 Draw at Maple Leaf Gardens Opener

The UUHA's Brockton Rockets (above) provide smiley post-game proof that a come-from-behind tie can be as satisfying as - or even more satisfying than - a win (especially when you pull it off at Maple Leaf Gardens).

TORONTO - The Brockton Rockets managed to erase a two-goal deficit before potting a late-game tying goal against the Parkdale Lads this past Saturday at Maple Leaf Gardens. The noon-hour game was the first of a dozen UUHA matches to be contested this season under the iconic dome of the storied hockey shrine.

After a wildly offensive, yet scoreless 1st period that saw the two teams combine for 20 shots on net, Lads sniper Kyle Welton potted the game's first goal just a minute-and-a-half into the 2nd frame, making good on a feed from Fil Freitas and defenceman Nick Hehn to beat Rockets tender Kaniver Singh. Ryan Kalinka would make it 2-0 for the Parkdale side less than a minute later. The Rockets' Kiryl Nikifarau was subsequently sprung by bench mates Ian Merringer and Mario Vella to cut the lead in half at the 3:41 mark of the period. David Dobson then deposited the tying goal for the Rockets with just over two minutes remaining in the 2nd, only to watch as Welton regained the Lads lead 58 seconds later. The Rockets poured it on in the final period of the game, doubling up on the Lads in the shot department (12-6) with the final attempt by Dobson solving Lads goalie Luis Freitas at the 2:01 mark of the 3rd.

The Lads Fabian Ruzic collected an assist on his squad's final goal, while Joseph Desjardins and Paul Shields earned helpers on Dobson's second tally.

Later that evening at Upper Canada College, the Dufferin Groove marked their first contest of the UUHA season with a 3-1 win over the Wheafield Souldiers. Rookie Ryan Turner combined with Jimmy Murphy and Jon Weier to register the first goal of the game, putting the Souldiers up less than two minutes in. But the Groove's Jeremy Wilton would draw his team even less than five minutes later, converting a crease-front feed from linemate Tim Freeman. The Groove's Todd Meaney notched the only tally of the 2nd period (assisted by Chris Dinsdale), while Freeman would corral a stanchion-deflected clearing attempt with just 24 seconds left in the 3rd for an insurance marker into an empty Wheatfield net. Groove goaltender Mario Pistone turned aside no fewer than 13 shots in the 3rd period alone in a noteworthy effort to help protect his side's lead.

The second game of the night saw the Gas Station Islanders bettered by the Jokers to the tune of 7-3. Steve Levine and Craig Hughson each put in multiple-goal performances (a hatrick and a pair, respectively) while Sean Cullen and Gary Rideout Jr. contributed solo tallies. Nick Purdon, Seth Singer and call-up Brian Nevin scored for GSI in a game that saw both benches peopled with a trio of spare players.

And in the final game of the night the Beau's Beer Hack kept their points streak alive with a 3-0 victory over the Humiliation. Team scoring leader Louis Durand beat goaltender Luke Smit on two occasions, while Aaron Foster potted the Hack's third goal of the contest. Goaltender Aaron Brophy registered his first shutout of the year, while the Humiliation endured their second consecutive game in which they failed to find the back of their opponent's net. Despite that lack of offence, however, the Humiliation are enjoying a points streak of their own having turned in two penalty-free matches in as many weeks. That's good for a full point in the standings, as well as a buffer between the team and the basement (the lone tenancy of which currently belongs to the win-less Wheafield Souldiers).

UUHA action continues next Saturday with the Beau's Beer Hack attempting to better their 3rd-place standing vs. the Parkdale Porcupines at 7:00 PM. The streaking Jokers take on the Brockton Rockets at 8:00 PM, while the evening's final match will see the Humiliation attempt to find their scoring touch against the Gas Station Islanders as both teams look to collect their first win of the season.
