Jokers, Porcupines, GSI Advance to A-Side Round-Robin Series

TORONTO - The Jokers, Porcupines and Gas Station Islanders posted wins in the opening round of the 2013 UUHA Playoffs this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. As such, the three squads will compete in the A-Side Round-Robin Series next Saturday, March 9, the winner of which earns a berth in the UUHA Championship Final. Meanwhile, the Parkdale Lads, Wheatfield Souldiers and Humiliation - all of whom were defeated in their opening round Playoff games, will compete in the B-Side Round-Robin Series the following Saturday (March 16) with the top team in that bunch earning a Championship Final berth as well.

Jokers forward Mike Takacs got his team on the board first, converting a passing play from Paul Irving and Ted Bisaillion to solve Lads goaltender Luis Freitas at the 7:30 mark of the 1st period. After a disallowed goal that saw four of the five Lads on the ice celebrate prematurely, Parkdale sniper Kyle Welton would answer back midway through the next frame, picking up a feed from defenceman Terry Martin and bulging the twine behind Jokers netminder Burke Lawrence. But a tenacious Steve Levine would get the lead back for the Jokers early in the 3rd period, assisted in his efforts by Craig Hughson and Hunter Collins. Freitas, who has been on fire of late, turned aside 22 of 24 Jokers shots, while Lawrence stopped nine of 10 Lads attempts.

Next up, an uncharacteristically short Wheatfield Souldiers bench faced off against an even shorter Porcupines squad the results of which suggest better things tend to come in smaller packages. The Porcs got on the board first, surprising the Souldiers power-play unit with a short-handed tally at the 5:38 mark of the opening frame (Adam Thrasher scored with Todd Moffat collecting the assist). Souldiers forward Steve Harkness corralled a rebound seconds into the 2nd period to knot the game at 1-1 (with Eric Toth and Chuck Molgat assisting). But the Quills' Moffat replied a minute-and-a-half later, solving goaltender John Sutton unassisted. Souldiers veteran Kelly McCaig then potted what would be his side's last goal of the game, beating goalie Dean Bentley by converting a passing play from Keven Magura and Regular Season assists leader Mike Harkness at 7:10 of the 2nd period.

From that point on it was all Porcs, though, as Moffat got his second of the game on a wrap-around atempt that was ultimately directed over the goal line by the sprawling goalie's skate. Wayne Cohrane then potted his team's second short-handed tally of the game to open up a 4-2 lead for the Pines. The 3rd period saw the Porcs switch into defensive mode, straying briefly from the game plan to spring James Walker for an insurance marker with 2:45 left on the clock. Cochrane and James Tourigny (2) collected assists on the winning side's late goals.

The final game of the night looked as though it was headed to a scoreless shootout until Gas Station Islanders speedster Klint Davies finally solved Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan partway into the 3rd period (with Tim Vesely and Seth Singer assisting). Davies would strike again (this time unassisted) exactly three minutes later to put his side up 2-0, which is how the game would end. The two primary story lines of the game were Sanagan's outstanding efforts to keep the Orange Tide in it, and the effectiveness of GSI's defensive units to keep opposing forwards out of it: Sanagan turned aside 27 of 29 GSI attempts, while the Isles' blueliners stifled their opponents' sticks, allowing just 10 shots (the tallying of which may have been generous) to get through to goaltender Lane Dunlop.

UUHA Playoff action resumes next Saturday with the Jokers taking on the Porcupines at 7:00 PM, followed by the Porcs vs. GSI at 8:00. The final game of the night will see GSI test the rested legs of the Jokers at 9:00 PM. All games take place on the NHL regulation-sized ice pad at storied and historic Upper Canada College.
