TORONTO - The Parkdale Lads closed out the 2013 UUHA Winter Classic Series with a 4-2 win over the Gas Station Islanders this past Sunday evening at the outdoor rink in High Park. The tight game also represented the final match of the 2012/13 UUHA Regular Season.
Lads leading scorer Kyle Welton potted the first three goals for the victorious side, with defenceman Nick Hehn solving GSI goaltender Graham Walsh for an insurance marker with 13 minutes left to play in the second half. Hehn also earned a pair of assists on th enight, as did fellow Lads blueliner Terry Martins. (Mark Duquette and Simon Evers were credited with helpers, too.)
Welton's three goals were not enough to knock GSI sniper Dominic Chartier from atop the UUHA Regular Season leader board, though, as the two gifted forwards finished 1st and 2nd respectively in both points and goals, separated by just a single goal. Although Chartier missed on the game's only penalty shot (waiting out Lads goaltender Luis Freitas but ultimately putting the puck off the outside of the goalpost), he did collect an assist on linemate Tim Vesely's goal to maintain honours. Seth Singer also scored for GSI, while Richard Switzer, George Collins and Nick Purdon earned assists.
Although both teams created numerous quality scoring chances, the Lads' strong defensive play contributed significantly to the team's victory, particularly the stellar goaltending of Freitas, who likely turned in his most solid performance of the season. Coupled with an equally strong game the previous night versus the Humiliation, the Lads appear well prepared for the UUHA Playoffs, which begin next Saturday, March 2 at Ypper Canada College.
