TORONTO - Goaltender Mario Pistone turned aside 17 shots en route to his second shutout of the season as the Dufferin Groove defeated the Parkdale Hockey Lads 2-0 this past Saturday night. Cross-ice counterpart Ian McKellar (sparing for the Lads) was equal to Pistone's saves total, however, 2nd-period goals from Ted Neale and Chris Dinsdale made the difference on the scoreboard. The two forwards tallied just 18 seconds apart, while Jeremy Wilton and Oliver Jimenez (2) collected assists on the offensive flurry. The win saw the Groove better its record to 6-4-1 with just a single game remaining in the team's 12-game UUHA exhibition schedule. The Groove's campaign wraps up this coming Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 pm vs. the Jokers.
Gas Station Islanders' sniper Dominic Chartier scored his league-leading 16th goal of the season on the first shot of GSI's 8:00 pm game vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers (linemate Cam Collyer was credited with the assist). That, however, would be the all the scoring GSI would do on the night, as goaltender Mike Wilk turned aside the next dozen attempts, improving his Goals Against Average to 1.60 in the process. Meanwhile, Souldiers' sticks produced a pair of 2nd-period goals that would prove just enough to earn the team it's second-consecutive win while extending the Souldiers' undefeated streak to four games. Eric Toth and Derek Domingos tallied, while Kelly McCaig, Chuck Molgat and Mike Harkness collected assists. The 1st-place Souldiers managed to hold off a last-minute surge as the Islanders took advantage of a too-many-men infraction against the Souldiers called with just 41 seconds remaining in the game. The resultant six-on-four play (with GSI spare goalie Lane Dunlop pulled for the extra attacker) provided some of the most exciting action of the night.
And in the evening's final contest, the Jokers downed the Brockton Rockets 5-1 to keep 1st place in their sights as the UUHA Regular Season moves into its final month of games. Craig Hughson and Hunter Collins put the Funniest Team on Ice ahead by a pair in the 1st period, successfully converting plays from Mike Takacs and Ted Bisaillion, and Steve Levine and Charlie Rishor, respectively. Rockets' spare Paul Shields halved the deficit early in the 2nd frame, combining with Gregor Campbell for what would be the Brockton squad's only tally of the night. Bisaillion, Rishor and Levine would provide the final three nails in the figurative coffin, with Tyler Stewart earning credit for a helper on Bisaillion's tally (the latter two goals were scored unassisted). Despite the loss, Rockets goaltender K. Singh turned in an impressive performance between the pipes, stopping 31 of 36 Jokers' attempts.
UUHA action resumed this Saturday, Feb. 2 with the Jokers and Dufferin Groove going at it at 7:00 pm, followed by the Humiliation and Hack H.C. The 9:00 pm contest sees the Gas Station Islanders face off against the Brockton Rockets. All three games take place on the regulation NHL-sized ice pad at prestigious Upper Canada College in dirty old Toronto.
