Freitas Shutout Lifts Lads Over Rockets

TORONTO - Parkdale Lads goaltender Luis Freitas registered his first shutout of the season this past Saturday night, helping his side defeat the Brockton Rockets by a decisive 3-0 margin. The victory (which also represented Freitas' inaugural win of the 2012/13 UUHA Regular Season) was the veteran goaltender's first shutout in nearly 15 months, his previous goose egg being registered on Oct. 1, 2011 during the Lads' 4-0 spanking of the Parkdale Porcupines. Kyle Welton, Mike Frolick and Tommy Gough each tallied for the victors, while Welton, Mark Duquette and Fernando Freitas each garnered assists. Lads forward Tom Nesbitt collected assists on both Welton's and Frolicks' goals, earning the speedy winger 3rd-Star honours in the process. Welton was fingered for the game's 1st Star while Rockets goaltender Nathan Gordon was named 2nd star, having turned aside 24 of 27 shots. (Lads defence managed to successfully limit Brockton's shot total to just 11 attempts on the night.)

Wheatfield Souldiers leading scorer Kelly McCaig drew figurative first blood in his squad's contest against the Parkdale Porcupines. The game was the second match-up between the two teams in three weeks, the first ending in a 2-2 draw. McCaig bulged the twine behind Porcs goaltender Dean Bentley near the end of the 1st period, finishing off a passing cycle that saw nearly every white sweater on the ice touch the puck twice in the offensive zone. Derek Domingos was credited with the assist on the tally.

The first half of the 2nd period saw the Souldiers put the game effectively out of reach, with Rob Zifarelli, Jimmy Murphy and Eric Toth each potting goals within a five-minute span. Brad Sveistrup, Chuck Molgat and Rodney Merchant collected assists on the barrage. However, nine minutes into the final frame Porcupines forward James Walker put to rest any anticipation of a shutout bid for goalie Sheldon Shurland, picking up his fourth goal of the season with the help of defenceman Lorne Kredl and a forechecking Brian Bentley. Two-and-a-half minutes later, though, Keven Magura would take advantage of a dish-and-screen play by Molgat to let loose a hard, top-corner slapper and regain the four-goal cushion for his side.

With the penalty-free win the Souldiers maintained top stop in the UUHA standings with 19.5 points.

The subsequent contest between the Gas Station Islanders and Humiliation proved to be the most exciting match of the night, especially given the proximity of the two teams in the overall standings where, at the outset of the game, they were separated by a mere half point.

Although the 1st-period shot count saw both teams register four attempts, GSI got the better of Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan as Steve Boyd and Dominic Chartier both registered goals (the pair assisted on each other's markers as well). Humiliation forward Stephen Cribbin answered back early in the 2nd period, though, combining with linemate Mike Thompson to solve spare goalie Graham Walsh just 45 seconds in. Islanders' Cam Collyer reinstated his side's two-goal lead a mere three minutes later, before veteran Humiliation sniper Luke Moretti stepped up to halve the difference shortly thereafter.

Next, it was Nicos Fassler's turn to light the lamp as he made good on a Moretti set up to net his second goal of the season, evening the score at 3-3 in the process. League scoring leader Dominic Chartier was not done for the night, though, and with just 2:50 remaining in the 3rd combined with Lorne McGinnis and Pim van der Toorn to reclaim the lead for GSI with his 15th goal of the season. But despite the obese lady performing vocal warm-up exercises in the wings, Thompson, Cribbin and Clint Whitworth executed some late heroics of their own, knotting the score with just over a minute remaining in the game. Those final seconds would solve nothing as the the longtime rivals skated to a 4-4 draw, maintaining the half-point standings differential in the process.

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Jan. 26 with the Parkdale Hockey Lads facing off against the Dufferin Groove at 7:00 pm. The Gas Station Islanders and Wheatfield Souldiers will renew acquaintances at 8:00 pm, while the Jokers return to the ice immediately thereafter as they attempt to put up a perfect season-series record vs. the Brockton Rockets. All on-ice shenanigans will transpire within the privileged environs of Upper Canada College's William B. Wilder Arena.
