Davies' Nat-Hat, Barber's Shutout Deliver Big GSI Win

TORONTO - Klint Davies scored a natural hat-trick and goaltender Matt Barber denied all shooters as the Gas Station Islanders trounced the Dufferin Groove 6-0 this past Saturday night. Isles' defensive units did their part, too, limiting the opposition to just 11 registered shots while 21 attempts went the other way.

League-leading scorer Dominic Chartier got GSI on the board early, finishing off a give-and-go play with winger George Collins just 29 seconds into the opening shift. Though unconfirmed at this point, the goal is definitely in contention for the fastest tally in UUHA history. Cam Collyer would strike next for GSI, completing a pretty play with Chartier and Nick Purdon, before Chartier collected his second of the game with just under seven minutes remaining in the 1st period. Davies would strike four minutes later, skating in an errant pass for an unassisted goal and putting his side up 4-0 going into the 2nd period.

The floodgates would close from that point on, notwithstanding Davies' nose for the net as the speedy forward potted another unassisted goal midway through the middle frame, then hooked up with Purdon and Collyer with 53 seconds remaining in the 3rd.

The big win puts the Isles within two points of 1st place in the overall UUHA standings. But, due to unprecedented parity within the league, GSI remained in fourth spot heading into this coming weekend's action. Barber's performance earned him top spot among goalies, though, having registered a Goals Against Average of just 1.20 over the course of five games.

In other UUHA action last Saturday, the Jokers outshot the Brockton Rockets by an astounding margin of 37-10. Despite that lopsided stat, though, the Jokers posted a conservative 3-1 victory thanks to goals from Hunter Collins, Charlie Rishor and Mike Takacs. Danny O'Quinn accounted for the lone Rockets tally, spoiling Jokers goaltender Gary Emanuel's shutout bid in the process. Goaltender Sheldon Shurland turned aside 34 shots for the losing side.

And the Parkdale Porcupines gave up a two-goal 1st period lead to the Hack, ultimately settling for a 2-2 tie. Wayne Cochrane and Adam Thrasher both tallied early for the Porcs, before Chris Barkley got his team within one goal midway through the 2nd. A penalty-filled 3rd period ended up working out in the Hack's favour, as Barkley scored again - this time on the power play - to tie the game with just 51 seconds remaining in what had deteriorated into a chippy contest.

UUHA action continues this Saturday, Jan. 19 with the Parkdale Lads taking on the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 pm. The Wheatfield Souldiers and Porcupines face off at 8:00 pm while the Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders renew rivalries at 9:00 pm in a game that could see either team make a bid for 1st place overall. All games take place at Upper Canada College's deluxe William B. Wilder Arena.
