Groove, Jokers Post Wins While Souldiers and Porcupines Tie

TORONTO -The Dufferin Groove held on to better the Humiliation by a single goal this past Saturday night, handing the Orange Tide its fourth defeat of the season - two of them coming at the hands of the exhibition Groove. The result halted a two-game winning streak that had seen the Humiliation prevail over both the Parkdale Hockey Lads and the Wheatfield Souldiers in late 2012. The win also saw the tenacious Groove improve its season record to 5-3-1.

Curiously, all scoring transpired during the opening period of play, commencing with Ted Neale's sixth tally of the campaign potted just four minutes in. Lee Kinder (who had assisted on Neale's goal) doubled the Groove's lead eight minutes later converting a feed from Dylan Juckes to solve spare goaltender Burke Lawrence. But with just eight seconds remaining in the period, Humiliation scoring leader Mike Thompson completed a play involving Stephen Cribbin and Clint Whitworth to beat Groove goaltender Chris Dinsdale and halve the deficit. Dinsdale, incidentally, usually plays as a skater for the Groove but, when required, answers the call as the squad's third-string goalie.

Contrary to the pattern of that match, nearly all the scoring in the subsequent Lads vs. Jokers contest was reserved for the final frame of the game (the exception being an unassisted 1st period tally by Jokers sniper Steve Levine). Tim Progosh was the first to wake up the scoreboard in the 3rd period, converting a set up from veteran Jokers Marc Hickox and Charlie Rishor a minute-and-a-half into proceedings. Levine followed with his second of the game at the 8:07 mark (assisted ny Hickox and Sean Cullen) before Tyler Stewart made it four unanswered goals four minutes later with help from Mike Takacs and Derek Thompson. Lads forward Mike Frolick managed to spoil goalie Burke Lawrence's shutout bid, though, skating in an intercepted pass to score with just over one minute remaining in the game. However, even that muted celebration was quieted when Steve Chamberlain combined with Levine to punctuate the Jokers' victory with another goal on the following play.

The win saw the Jokers move up to third place in the UUHA standings, a full point ahead of the Gas Station Islanders and just 1.5 points back of the second-place Humiliation. The Jokers, who have a game in hand over the Humiliation and the first-place Wheatfield Souldiers, have now won four in a row, their last defeat occurring back on Nov. 17 at the hands of the Islanders.

The Parkdale Porcupines showed that a little forechecking (or a lot, for that matter) can go a long way as they kept the Wheatfield Souldiers on their heels for much of the first match-up of the season between the two teams. Chris Valente opened the scoring for the Porcs near the end of the 1st period, one-timing a goal-mouth feed from Tod Moffat to beat netminder John Sutton on the stick side. The Souldiers responded midway through the 2nd period, though, as Eric Toth deflected a point shot from defenceman Mike Wilk for the team's third power-play tally of the season. James Walker would make good on a pass from Elias Vastas to put the Quills back on top midway through the 3rd. But with just eight seconds remaining, and the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Mike Harkness combined with Toth and Jimmy Murphy to pop in the tying goal and salvage a point for his side. The draw sets up a dramatic second meeting between the two team who are scheduled to face off against one another again on Saturday, Jan. 19.

UUHA Regular Season action continues next Saturday, Jan. 12 with the Jokers going up against the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 pm, followed by the Porcupines taking on the Hack H.C. The 9:00 pm contest will see the Gas Station Islanders return to the ice against the Dufferin Groove. All games take place at Upper Canada College's William B. Wilder Arena.
