TORONTO - The spirit of '67 was alive at Maple Leaf Gardens this past Monday evening as the Subtle Tendencies squad captured the fifth annual Yule Log Championship. Forward Kyle Welton (pictured above right) scored four times to equal the combined goal total of the opposing Red River Rebellion who were ultimately defeated 7-4 in the two-hour contest. Simon Evers (above left, holding aloft the Yule Log) maintained his perfect Yule Log record, having now played on the winning team for five consecutive seasonal tournaments. Both Evers and Welton were originally assigned to the Screaming Jays roster. However, after that team's third-place finish in the round-robin portion of the tournament, the two Lads were claimed by Subtle GM Rodney Merchant in the dispersal draft. Welton was later named Yule Log V tournament MVP.
Evers picked up a single point in the Final assisting on Matt Sharon's opening goal at the 12:20 mark of the 1st period. Sharon was also credited with the final goal of the game - an empty-net tally scored with just 34 seconds remaining in the game. Mike Frolick also scored for the winning side, while Mike Ryan, Kevin Lacroix, Rodney Merchant and late call-up Dimi Heglund collected assists.
Seth Singer, Marc Hickox, Ted Bisaillion and Jason Pilling each contributed a goal to the Rebellion's cause, while Martin Jensen, Pilling, Singer and Gary Rideout Jr. registered helpers. Rebellion goaltender Mike Wilk (who got the late crease call after Luke Smit failed to make it to the the game) faced 30 shots on the night, while cross-ice counterpart John Sutton turned aside 20 of 24 attempts for the win.
The balance of the Yule Log V Championship roster included defencemen Sean Cullen, Kurt Smeaton, Heather Cunningham and Chuck Molgat, along with forwards Stephen Cribin, Kim Temple and Andrew McNab. The Rebellion's room was rounded out by Matt Latreille, Eric Toth, Fabian Ruzic, Jon Weier, Kelly Dutton, Geoff McPeek, Joseph Desjardains and GM Keven Magura.
