Souldiers, Jokers Register Routs While Lads Post Another Win

TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers scored eight times against the Hack H.C. this past Saturday night, tying a team record set two-and-a-half seasons ago and affording Burton's Boys solo possession of the top spot in the league standings for the first time this season. Goaltender Sheldon Shurland posted a shutout in the game, as well, tying Jokers netminder Burke Lawrence with a pair of blanks each.

Defenceman Rodney Merchant opened the scoring with just over a minute remaining in the opening period, garnering his first goal of the season with the help of teammates Brad Sveistrup and Scott Montgomery. The 2nd period saw the Souldiers increase their lead to 3-0 with a net-front one-timer by Jimmy Murphy and a power-play marker from Eric Toth. The ice tilted decidedly in the Souldiers favour come the final frame, as Toth, Kelly McCaig (2), Sveistrup and Derek Domingos combined for five goals on just five recorded shots. Shurland ultimately turned aside 17 shots including nine in a 2nd period Hack barrage.

The Jokers made it back into the win column, as well, turning in their best performance of the season in a 5-0 drubbing of the Humiliation. Captain Ted Bisaillion potted his first of two midway through the opening frame, collecting the puck from defenceman Craig Hughson to solve Humiliation goatender Chris Sanagan. Bisaillion struck again at the 5:58 mark of the 2nd period, this time combining with veteran Jokers blueliner Adrian Cavan. Mike Takacs and Joel Lacoursiere would also register goals before the end of the period, making it 4-0 to start the 3rd. Gary Rideout completed the route early in the final period, converting a feed from Lacoursier to pot his third of the season.

In earning the shutout, Burke Lawrence turned aside 18 Humiliation attempts. Coincidentally, the Jokers also registered 18 shots over the course of the came.

Lawrence's post-game celebration was short-lived, though, as he soon found himself back on the ice sparing for the Brockton Rockets in their 9:00 pm contest against the Parkdale Lads. Similarly, Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy had been pressed into substitute duty for the Lads, affording him an opportunity at personal redemption following his team's earlier loss.

Brophy would get his redemption, too, thanks in large part to the combined efforts of Lads linemates Tommy Gough and Kyle Welton, the former potting a pair of 1st period tallies set up exclusively by the latter. Rockets defenceman Robert Campbell would combine with Oliver Sutherns and spare Chuck Molgat midway through the 2nd frame to draw Brockton within a goal of the Lads. But a 3rd period Welton wrister (on which Mike Frolick assisted) sealed the deal, giving the Lads their first points streak of the season and earning Welton sole possession of top spot in the Regular Season scoring race with 10 goals.

UUHA Regular Season action continues this Saturday, Dec. 15 with two games on the schedule at Upper Canada College. The Parkdale Porcupines and Gas Station Islanders return from a weekend off to go head-to-head at 7:00 pm, while the Jokers face off against the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 pm. The following evening (Sunday, Dec. 16) sees the UUHA return to Maple Leaf Gardens for a 7:00 pm one-off game featuring the Wheatfield Souldiers and the Humiliation.
