Gas Station Islanders Tie Lads 3-3 to Claim First Place

TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders claimed the top spot in the UUHA standings this past Saturday night despite skating to a 3-3 tie with the Parkdale Lads. The single point was enough to leapfrog GSI ahead of the Humiliation for 1st place honours by a mere half point. The Humiliation had the weekend off and currently has a game in hand on their blue-shirted rivals.

GSI forward George Collins opened the scoring late in the 1st period, finding himself suitably unchecked in front of goaltender Luis Freitas' net to convert a nifty passing play from Dominic Chartier and Kevin Lacroix. Lads speedster Mike Frolick answered back a minute-and-a-half later, however, skating in a break-out play involving linemate Simon Evers and spare defenceman Rodney Merchant. Kyle Welton would put the Lads up late in the 2nd frame with help from rookie Ron Sherkin and birthday boy Tommy Gough.

The 3rd period would see some Dominion Day-worthy fireworks, though, as Seth Singer wasted little time evening the score with the Isles' second goal of the night, potted unassisted at the 11:25 mark. Four minutes later, with the Lads killing a 5-minute major penalty, Chartier would net the go-ahead goal, claiming the top spot in the league's goal-scoring race in the process. Still a man down, however, the Lads quickly snatched momentum back as Welton collected a feed from Gough and lifted in a moonshot to knot things at three a piece. In addition to tying the game, Welton claimed a share of the goal-scoring title from Chartier in the process. Despite some heavy drama and chances at both ends, the remaining six minutes solved nothing.

The tie also moved the Lads ahead of the Jokers in the standings, albeit only by a half point. The Jokers, however, have two games in hand on the Lads.

In other UUHA action this past Saturday night, just a week after shutting out the Islanders at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Parkdale Porcupines were themselves shut out by the Dufferin Groove, this time to the tune of 3-0. Derek Smith, Lee Kinder and Dylan Juckes scored for the Groove, while Tim Freeman was credited with a pair of assists. Groove goaltender Mario Pistone picked up the goose egg, turning aside just nine registered shots in the process.

Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers extended their unbeaten streak to five games, defeating the Brockton Rockets 3-1 in a game that saw the losing side hamstrung by five minor penalties. Kelly McCaig potted a pair of goals, while Wes Gerbrandt won a footrace with goaltender Nelson Cunha to convert a long-bomb pass into what would stand up as the game-winning tally. Michael Wilcox registered the lone goal for the Rockets, skating in a feed from Oliver Sutherns to solve third-string Souldiers goalie Mike Wilk. Eric Toth, Chuck Molgat, Rob Zifarelli (2) and Keven Magura earned assists for the winning side.

The 2012/13 UUHA Regular Season continues this coming Saturday, Dec. 8 at Upper Canada College with the Wheatfield Souldiers taking on the Hack at 7:00 PM. The Humiliation will attempt to recapture first place overall when they face off against the Jokers at 8:00 PM, while the Brockton Rockets and Parkdale Lads will both attempt to get back in the win column as the two West Side squads do battle at 9:00 PM.
