TORONTO - The Parkdale Porcupines skated to their first-ever win at Maple Leaf Gardens this past Saturday night, and in commanding fashion, too. The Pines outscored the Gas Station Islanders 6-0 to move within a single point of the second-place Isles and, in the process, prevented their opponent from claiming first place overall in the Regular Season UUHA standings. GSI remains a mere half point behind the first-place Humiliation. The game represented just the second loss of the season for the Isles.
Porcs forward James Tourigny opened the scoring just two minutes into the 1st period, making good on a feed from defenceman Adam Thrasher. There was no scoring for the next 15 minutes or so, as both teams traded opportunities or were mutually mired in neutral zone mishaps. But at the 9"15 mark of the 2nd period, speedy Porcupines spare Kris Laamanen capped off a nifty passing play with Geoff McPeek and Matt Latreille to solve goaltender Lane Dunlop and pit the Quills up by a pair. James Walker provided some insurance just over a minute later, followed a few minutes later by Tourigny's second of the night. The Porcupines scored two more unanswered goals in the 3rd period to cap off the team's most consistent offensive match of the season thus far.
Porcupines spare goaltender Matt Downey turned aside 14 shots for the shutout, while Dunlop faced 22 shots, including an 11-shot 2nd period barrage.
A full slate of UUHA action is scheduled for this coming Saturday, Dec. 1 at Upper Canada College starting with the Porcupines facing off against the Dufferin Groove at 7:00 PM. Gas Station Islanders will look to get back into the win column as they go up against the slumping Parkdale Lads at 8:00 PM, while the Wheatfield Souldiers take on the Brockton Rockets immediately thereafter.
