TORONTO - Although nearly 37 years had transpired since the last meeting between the two teams at Maple Leaf Gardens, the outcome was the same this past Saturday afternoon as the Toronto Toros defeated the visiting Winnipeg Jets by a score of 3-2. The previous contest (which transpired on Sunday, March 21, 1976) saw the Toros gore the Jets by a more considerable margin of 5-2.
Toros winger Paul Aucoin's performance was more than worthy of 1st Star honours, having potted all three of his team's goal, including the tie-breaking, game-winning tally with just 2:47 remaining in the final frame.
Jets defenceman Keven Magura got his team on the board in the waning seconds of the 1st period, pinching in to blast a curveball past Toros goaltender Mike Wilk. Aucoin answered back late in the 2nd, picking up a feed from blueliner Mike Craig and beating Jets golie Luis Freitas stickside to knot proceedings at 1-1. Later on the same shift, Aucoin would combine with linemates Mike Thompson and Stephen Cribbin, each of whom would have a whack at multiple rebounds before the bouncing puck found its way across the goal line.
Jets sniper Kyle Welton, left unchecked at the side of the home net, would tie things up for the visitors at the 3:26 mark of the 3rd period, setting the stage for Aucoin's go-ahead marker less than a minute later. Toros defencemen Sean Cullen and Rodney Merchant would both collect helpers on Aucoin's hat-trick tally.
