Jets, Toros Make Historic Return to Maple Leaf Gardens

TORONTO - This Saturday, Nov. 24, for the first time in nearly four decades, the Toronto Toros will play host to the Winnipeg Jets at Maple Leaf Gardens. The puck drops on the hour-long afternoon match at 3:00 PM. The last time the two teams clashed under the iconic Gardens dome was on Sunday, March 21, 1976. That World Hockey Association game saw the home side defeat the visiting Jets by a score of 5-2.

This time around the two teams will be peopled with two dozen players from the various squads of the UUHA. Reporting to the Toros' dressing room will be Humiliation forwards Mike Thompson, Stephen Cribbin and Paul Aucoin, along with defencemen Duncan Bunclark and Mike Craig. Sean Cullen and Duncan Fremlin will represent for the Jokers, while Nick Purdon laces up on behalf of the Gas Station Islanders. Wheatfield Souldiers Mike Wilk, Jimmy Murphy, Brad Sveistrup, Chuck Molgat and goaltender John Sutton will also don Toros blue, as will free agent Sean Cordner.

Providing the offensive punch for the visiting side will be Parkdale Hockey Lads Mike Frolick, Kyle Welton and Simon Evers, Brockton Rockets Joseph Desjardains and Ian Merringer, and Wheatfield Souldiers Eric Toth, Scott Montgomery, Jon Weier and alumnus Jon Jenkins. The Jets blue line will be patrolled by the Lads Fabian Ruzic, Wheatfield Souldiers Rodney Merchant and Keven Magura, along with Manitoba import Gus Castanada. Lads goaltender Luis Freitas will backstop the Jets side.

Having played their inaugural season out of Varsity Arena, the WHA's Toronto Toros called Maple Leaf Gardens home for the final two seasons of the team's existence (1974-76). Gardens owner Harold Ballard (who begrudged the rival WHA for cherry picking the Toronto Maple Leafs roster a few years earlier) infamously charged the Toros an additional $3,500 for the use of the arena's lights, after already collecting $15,000 per game. The team would relocate to Birmingham, Alabama (and be rechristened the Bulls) following the 1975-76 season.

The Toros final roster featured such pro hockey greats as Frank Mahovlich, Paul Henderson, Jim Dorey, Mark Napier and goaltender Gilles Gratton. That season's Jets roster included Bobby Hull, Ulf Nilsson, Anders Hedberg and Veli-Pekka Ketola with Joe Daley and Ernie Wakely splitting the team's goaltending duties. The Jets won their first of three Avco Cup Championships at the end of that season, while the Toros lost to the Chicago Cougars in the Easter Finals.

Also on the Maple Leaf Gardens calendar this Saturday is a one-off evening match featuring the Gas Station Islanders taking on the Parkdale Porcupines. The puck drops on that UUHA Regular Season contest at 9:00 PM. Admission to both of these games is absolutely free and spectators are encouraged to enter through the facility's main doors on Carleton Street, then proceed up the escalators to the third floor.
