Lads, Jokers Post 4-4 Draw at Maple Leaf Gardens

TORONTO - The Parkdale Lads picked up a much needed point-and-a-half this past Saturday night at Maple Leaf Gardens, skating to a 4-4 tie against the fifth-place Jokers. The penalty-free draw wasn't enough to pull the Lads out of the basement in the UUHA standings, but with a mere half point separating them and the Funniest Team on Ice (who also put in a penalty-free performance) there may be some light at the top of the staircase.

The Lads opened the scoring early as veteran forward Simon Evers expertly provided the toe for Paul Simmons' and Kevin Brauti's tick and tack (respectively), bulging the twine behind Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence just 57 seconds into the game. The celebration was short lived, though, as Jokers speedster Hunter Collins combined with Tim Progosh and Steve Levine on the following shift. The goal represented the first-ever Jokers goal scored at the hallowed hockey shrine, the team having been shut out on their only previous Gardens appearance.

Jokers veteran Marc Hickox, displaying uncanny skill for a player who now resides in balmy Los Angeles, realized a boyhood dream of his own two-and-a-half minutes later, teaming up with Mike Takacs and Charlie Rishor to spoil Lads goaltender Luis Freitas' 1st-period stats and put his side ahead by one. Takacs, currently enjoying a stint as his team's leading scorer, added an insurance marker early in the 2nd frame, picking up a feed from Craig Hughson to score his first of two tallies on the night.

But the Lads would respond soon thereafter as Tommy Gough seized upon a goalmouth rebound out of Lawrence's catcher to bat the biscuit beyond the goal line. Despite some dramatic protestation on the goaltender's part, the controversial goal stood and the Jokers' lead was halved. Lads sniper Kyle Welton then went to work, hooking up with Gough and Mark "Duece" Duquette to solve Lawrence and knot proceedings at three goals a piece. Takacs' second of the night (scored at 6:14 of the 3rd period) was then matched by Welton's, as the teams played out the final four minutes en route to a 4-4 draw before shaking hands under the luminous glow of the iconic Gardens dome.

Despite letting in four goals each, both goaltenders put in some stellar saves while facing above-average shot counts: the Lads Freitas faced 20 shots from the opposition while the Jokers Lawrence was tested 28 times.

The game's warm-up music was provided by the Black Aces whose debut EP Puck Rock can now be said to have enjoyed its first-ever public broadcast at Maple Leaf Gardens. For more info on the EP and the excellent two-piece rock unit (comprised of Jokers Marc Hickox and Tyler Stewart) check out the Black Aces online at www.facebook.com/blackacespuckrock.

In other UUHA action this past Saturday night the first-place Humiliation continued their run of solid hockey, defeating the Brockton Rockets 3-1 at Upper Canada College. Clint Whitworth, Mike Thompson and Duncan Bunclark all scored for the victorious side, while Dougie Dobson accounted for the lone Rockets tally in the penalty-free contest. Similarly, the Dufferin Groove bettered the Parkdale Porcupines 3-1 in yet another game that featured nary an infraction. James Tourigney scored for the 'Pines, while Groove sniper Ted Neale collected all three goals for the winning side.

Meanwhile the Hack H.C. and Gas Station Islanders renewed their longstanding rivalry, ultimately settling for a 2-2 draw in the process. Dominic Chartier potted both goals for the Isles, while David Laverdiere and Joseph DeBenedictic tallied for the Hack. Seth Singer, Steve Boyd and Richard Switzer were awarded assists on GSI's goals, while Aaron Foster, Stefan Barkley and Tim Bolen helped set up those of the Hack.

UUHA Regular Season action continues this coming Saturday, Nov. 17 with the Parkdale Lads taking on the Wheatfield Souldiers at 7:00 pm and the Dufferin Groove facing off against the Humiliation immediately thereafter. The Jokers and GSI are scheduled to go at it at 9:00 pm. All games take place at UCC.
