Souldiers, Humiliation Tie, While Groove, Rockets Post Wins

TORONTO - Had the CBC's Hockey Night in Canada been broadcasting the Humiliation vs. Wheatfield Souldiers game this past Saturday night, Canadian hockey fans would've enjoyed an exciting, back-and-forth display of real, live hockey rather than a rebroadcast of a classic game from the archives. Despite the lack of cameras, though, the rival squads conjured one for the ages, skating to a dramatic 3-3 tie in what was ostensibly a rematch of last season's Championship Final (the result of which was a 3-0 win in the Souldiers' favour).

The Humiliation wasted little time in making up for the lack of offence that typified their previous meeting with the Wheatfield Souldiers as forward Joe Cook, sprung by linemate Paul Morris and defenceman Eric Partington, made good on a breakaway attempt just two-and-a-half minutes into the opening frame. The tally was Cook's fourth goal of the season, knotting him with Mike Thompson for the team's leading scorer honours and a four-way share of the league title.

Midway through the 2nd period it was the Souldiers' turn to bulge twine as centreman Kelly McCaig combined with blueliners Keven Magura and Joe Serlin to tie the game at a goal apiece. Just three minutes later, though, Cook struck again, converting a feed from Morris to solve goaltender John Sutton for the second time of the night and restore the Humiliation's lead. With that goal (his fifth of the campaign) Cook nabbed sole possession of the league's current scoring title.

The 3rd period would belong to the Souldiers, though, as Chuck Molgat picked up his first goal of the season backhanding a goal-mouth feed from Brad Sveistrup through the legs of spare goaltender Luis Freitas. Five minutes later, Molgat would provide the screen for a Magura fader that found the inside of the far post, putting the Souldiers on top for the first time in the game. But with just 2:30 left in the game, the leading side would be assessed a defensive zone penalty for hooking, setting the stage for a late Humiliation rally. And rally the Humiliation did, as Clint Whitworth hooked up with Cook and Partington for the game-tying power-play marker with just 45 seconds left on the clock. That remaining time would solve nothing, as the final horn sounded setting the stage for what ought to be an exciting rematch between the two squads on Sunday, Dec. 16 at Maple Leaf Gardens.

With the tie, the Humiliation also edged the Gas Station Islanders for 1st place in the overall UUHA standings. The Islanders, who did not see action this past weekend, do, however, have a game in hand.

The win column belonged to the exhibition squads this past Saturday night as the Dufferin Groove and Brockton Rockets bettered the Lads and Porcupines in their respective contests. The Groove's narrow victory (2-1) marked the team's first-ever UUHA win, having started the game with a record of 0-2-1. Meanwhile, the Rockets' victory brought the exhibition team back to the .500 mark (2-2-0).

Groove forward Tim Freeman opened the scoring unassisted at the 3:15 of the 1st period, putting a deceptively harmless-looking shot past goalie Luis Freitas and into the Lads' net. Duf Worden doubled the Groove's lead late in the 2nd period, converting a passing play involving Todd Meaney and Ted Neale for the insurance marker. But with just 16 seconds remaining in the game, and with the Lads net empty for the extra attacker, forward Tommy Gough teamed with Kyle Welton and Fernando Freitas to spoil goaltender Heath Donaldson's shutout bid. Prior to the goal, Donaldson had turned aside the previous 19 Lads' shots, often in acrobatic fashion. Although he did not get the shutout, his performance was enough to warrant 1st Star of the Game honours.

Goaltending was a major part of the storyline in the Brockton Rockets' win over the Parkdale Porcupines, as well, with Sheldon Shurland picking up his first shutout with the exhibition squad. Cross-rink counterpart Dean Bentley was just two saves shy of being equal to that task, turning in a number of highlight-reel quality saves, as well. Forward Kiryl Nikifarau and spare Darrin Barcelos tallied for the winning side, with assist going to Nikifarau, Dan Kleiman and Jeff Harper.

UUHA action continues this Saturday, Nov. 10 with four games on the schedule, including an historic 10:00 PM contest between the Jokers and Parkdale Lads at Maple Leaf Gardens. UCC will see the Gas Station Islanders and Hack H.C. renew acquaintances at 7:00 PM, followed by the Parkdale Porcupines first dalliance with the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 PM. The 9:00 PM game features the Humiliation taking on the Brockton Rockets. This will be the first time in the UUHA's history that Regular Season games have occurred at two different venues on the same night.
