Last-Minute Hack Job Fells Jokers While GSI Reclaims 1st Place

TORONTO - With just four minutes remaining in the 3rd period, and a pair of goose eggs up on the board, this past Saturday's contest between the Jokers and the Hack. H.C. appeared well on its way to a typical MLS result: a scoreless tie. That was, however, before Jokers sniper Steve Levine combined with linemates Gary Rideout and Paul Irving to finally solve the riddle of Hack goaltender Aaron Brophy.

The Jokers' celebratory glow would last for about as long as a dry, regular-length Du Maurier, though, as Hack forward Aaron Foster took advantage of the pulled-goalie/extra-attacker situation to skate in and pot the unassisted equalizer with just 47 seconds remaining in the game. Then, with both sides back to five skaters aside, Wade Ivan sprung Hack scoring leader Louis Durand who charged down the left wing and let go a stinger of a blast toward the Jokers goal. Durand's shot was true and it sparked the lamp with a mere 22 seconds left in the contest.

The game's final, abbreviated shift saw no further scoring as the Hack handed the Jokers their third loss of the season and picked up the second-consecutive win of their UUHA exhibition campaign. (The Hack next sees UUHA action on Saturday, Nov. 10 when they face off against longtime rivals the Gas Station Islanders.)

In other UUHA action this past weekend, the Wheatfield Souldiers held on to defeat the Dufferin Groove by a score of 3-1 in the second of two back-to-back exhibition games between the well-matched squads (the first game ended in a 2-2 draw). Souldiers forward Kelly McCaig opened the scoring with three minutes left in the 1st period, snapping home a goal-mouth pass from team points leader Mike Harkness (defenceman Rodney Merchant collected an assist on the goal, as well). Then Eric Toth combined with Jimmy Murphy two minutes later to give the reigning UUHA Champions a 2-0 lead.

Souldiers veteran Rob Zifarelli increased his team's lead midway through the 2nd period, sending a hard point shot at the Groove net that caromed off an opponent and in behind goaltender Mario Pistone. Come the 3rd period, the Groove's Duff Worden picked off a clearing attempt to send a high shot over Souldiers 'tender Sheldon Shurland and in off the crossbar to get his team on the board with what would be the final goal of the game.

And the league-leading Gas Station Islanders got back into the win column with a 4-1 victory over the exhibition Brockton Rockets. Isles sniper Dominic Chartier was in on all four of his team's goals, potting two and assisting on tallies by Klint Davies and Steve Boyd. Michael Wilcox scored the lone goal for the Rockets (with Oliver Sutherns earning the assist). Chartier now owns a share of top spot on the UUHA leader board in both goals (4) and points (8) columns.

UUHA action continues this Saturday, Nov. 3 at UCC with the Rockets taking on the Porcupines at 7:00 PM and the Groove facing off against the Parkdale Hockey Lads immediately afterward. The Wheatfield Souldiers and Humiliation close out the evening at 9:00 PM in a game that could see either team finish the night atop the overall league standings. The game also represents the first match between the Souldiers and Humiliation since meeting in last season's Championship Final.
