Porcupines Claim Victory in Battle of Parkdale Series

TORONTO - The 2012 installment of the Battle of Parkdale goes to the Parkdale Porcupines after the team eked out a 3-2 victory over the struggling Parkdale Hockey Lads this past Saturday night at UCC. The game was the second (and final) meeting of the Regular Season between the neighbourhood rivals. The 'Pines won the first contest as well, defeating the Lads 3-1 back on Saturday, Sept. 15.

Defenceman Lorne Kredl and forward Todd Moffat combined to put the Porcs up by a pair in the 2nd period. But the Lads made a game of it in the final frame, converting on two of just four shots registered in the period. Go-to goal scorers Mike Frolick and Kyle Welton tallied for the Lads (the pair now accounts for half of the squad's goalscoring on the season) with assists awarded to Frolick and Simon Evers.

The Lads found themselves shorthanded for much of the 3rd period as they peopled the penalty box to serve four consecutive body-contact minors. Pines sniper Brian Bentley managed to capitalize on one of the resultant power plays, potting what would stand up as the game-winning goal with just 1:12 remaining on the clock. (Porcs spare James Tourigny was credited with an assist, as were regulars Elias Vastis and Geoff McPeek.)

In other UUHA action, the Humiliation held on to defeat the exhibition Brockton Rockets by a one-goal margin. Joe Cook, Mike Thompson and Luke Moretti tallied for the winning side, while Pete Gafney and Oliver Sutherns scored for the Rockets. The win firmed up the Humiliation's hold on 1st place in the overall league standings, while Thompson's two points in the game (he collected an assist on Moretti's marker, as well) helped him nab honours as the current UUHA points leader. Over the course of just four games, Thompson has accrued 8 points (4 goals and 4 assists) and is currently tied (with Lads sniper Kyle Welton) for most goals, as well. (Stephen Cribbin and Mike Craig (2) collected assists for the Humiliation, while Rockets Gaffney, Mike Wilcox and Jason Pilling were similarly credited.)

Meanwhile, the Wheatfield Souldiers skated to a 2-2 tie with the exhibition Dufferin Groove in the first of two back-to-back contests between the teams. Souldiers forward Scott Montgomery and defenceman Kev Magura picked up their first goals of the season, while current team points leader Mike Harkness collected the lone helpers on both tallies. Speedy Groove forward Ted Neale potted his side's first goal of the game while assisting linemate Todd Meaney on the second. (Jeremy Wilton and Paul Simmons were also credited with assists.)

Although the slumping Souldiers missed the win column once again, the team managed to score a few style points by debuting a new set of sweaters. Dubbed the Red River Rebellion jerseys, the set is emblazoned with an image of Manitoba's founding father, Louis Riel, along with an arm crest featuring the date of the so-called rebellion and the Metis flags of peacetime (blue) and wartime (red). Each sweater also bears the name of a historic figure from the important and controversial 1869 political event. The Souldiers donned the sweaters in honour of Riel's birthday which is celebrated on Oct. 22. (Riel was born in 1844 and executed by the Canadian government in November of 1885.)

UUHA action continues this coming Saturday, Oct. 27 with the Gas Station Islanders returning to the ice to face off against the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 PM. The Souldiers and Groove will go at it again at 8:00 PM, while the Jokers are set to square off with the Hack H.C. at 9:00 PM. All games take place at UCC.
