Lads, Jokers Shutout Souldiers, GSI While Porcs Edge Humiliation

TORONTO - The Parkdale Hockey Lads picked up their first win of the 2012/13 Regular Season this past Saturday night, and in dramatic fashion to boot.

Facing the Wheatfield Souldiers for the first time since last season's playoffs, the Lads defeated the reigning UUHA Champions by a lopsided score of 4-0 with team-leading sniper Kyle Welton collecting a natural hat-trick in the process. The other Lads goal was potted by Mike Frolick, who opened the scoring at the 5:20 mark of the 1st period. Simon Evers, Jason Abrams and rookies Marc Duquette and Ron Sherkin earned assists on the various Lads goals.

The Souldiers did have their chances, though, outshooting the Lads by a margin of 19-16 and conjuring at least three clear breakaways. But each successive opportunity was turned aside by goaltender Sheldon Shurland, who was serving as a spare for the winning side. Shurland (who, coincidentally, represents the other half of the Souldiers regular goaltending tandem) picked up his second shutout of the season. Souldiers goaltender John Sutton saw his season debut spoiled by the loss, while his team's offensive struggles continued, enduring their second scoreless effort just three games into the season.

Interestingly, despite the fact the Lads and Souldiers were the two most penalized teams last season, neither squad registered a single penalty in this contest, the overall play of which was considerably less lopsided than the final score might otherwise suggest. The game represented the first time the Souldiers were blanked by the Lads in nearly six-and-a-half years: On Sunday, March 12, 2006 the Lads beat the Souldiers 2-0 in Game 2 of a best-of-three playoff series at McCormick Arena. (The Souldiers would go on to win that series, along with two more, en route to a successful GTHLA Championship bid).

In other Saturday night UUHA action, the Jokers scored a pair of goals - one late in the opening frame and one late in the dying minutes of the game - to hand the streaking Gas Station Islanders their first loss of the season. Gary Rideout Jr. hooked up with Paul Irving and top-drawer spare Kyle Welton to put the Funniest Team on Ice ahead by a marker at the 3:35 mark of 1st period. Despite outshooting the Isles by a whopping 28-14 margin, the only other Jokers goal came off the stick of regular call-up Eric Andrews, who combined with defencemen Derek Thompson and Craig Hughson to solve tender Sheldon Shurland (putting in his second spare performance of the night) with just 1:43 remaining in the game. With the win the Jokers improved to .500 on the season while the Islanders maintain a tenuous hold on 1st place overall.

Like the Isles, the Humiliation took to the ice intent on preserving their status as unbeaten on the season. The Porcupines, meanwhile, had other plans and it was these that would prevail. The Humiliation got on the board first as defenceman Eric Partington skated back a picked-off Porcs pass and beat goaltender Ian McKellar with a hard shot from the top of the circle. Pines' forward Todd Moffat answered back exactly one minute later, though, converting a feed from Matt Latreille (his first of two assists on the night) to tie the game. A 2nd period tally from spare James Tourigny would put the boys in brown on top, and an insurance marker shortly thereafter from recently-returned Porcs veteran Adam Thrasher provided some insurance. Humiliation vets Luke Moretti and Mike Thompson would combine for a goal midway through the final frame but, despite a flurry of last-minute offence with an extra Humiliation attacker on the ice for pulled goalie Chris Sanagan, Thrasher's marker would stand up as the game winner.

Brian Bentley and Lorne Kredl also earned assists in the contest which, interestingly, was one of two games on the night completely devoid of penalty calls.

UUHA action resumes next Saturday, Oct. 20 at UCC with the Humiliation taking on the Brockton Rockets at 7:00 PM while the Souldiers face off against the Dufferin Groove at 8:00 PM (the first of two back-to-back games between the those teams). The 9:00 PM game features the second round of the Battle of Parkdale as the Lads go up against the Porcupines (the Pines bettered the Lads 3-1 back on Sept. 15).
