Habs Spoil Leafs' MLG Return As Humiliation, GSI Still Unbeaten

TORONTO - On one of the more memorable nights of UUHA hockey to date, the ghosts of Maurice Richard and Kenny Reardon were summoned to the newly reopened Maple Leaf Gardens to help the Wheatfield Souldiers find the win column for the first time in the 2012/13 hockey season. The conjuring exercise worked as the Souldiers (wearing the red, white and blue uniforms of the Montreal Canadiens) defeated the Jokers (donning blue Toronto Maple Leafs sweaters) by a score of 3-0.

The game was the first of four UUHA contests scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 22. The other matches saw the Gas Station Islanders and Humiliation skate to a 2-2 tie, while the Parkdale Lads fell to the Hack H.C. by a score of 5-2. The final game of the night's card saw the Brockton Rockets pick up their first-ever win, defeating the Parkdale Porcupines 4-2 in the process.

Souldiers defenceman Derek Domingos opened the scoring early in the team's 5:00 PM contest, picking off an errant Jokers pass and putting a quick, hard shot up and over the blocker of goaltender Burke Lawrence less than two minutes into the game. Forward Brad Sveistrup (donning Jaques Lemaire's #25 sweater) would make it 2-0 before the 1st period was over, capitalizing on a pinball-like loose-puck situation in the Jokers' crease to collect his first goal of the season. Jimmy Murphy would do the same midway through the 2nd frame, picking up a feed from defenceman Mike Wilk to cushion the lead of the would-be Habs. There would be no further scoring from either side. Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland turned aside 24 shots for the shutout - his first of the season.

The last time the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens played at Maple Leaf Gardens was on Dec. 26, 1998. That game ended in a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Following Saturday afternoon's game, Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion was interviewed about the match for a segment on CBC Radio One's Metro Morning which you can listen to here.

After a scoreless opening period, Gas Station Islanders sniper Dominic Chartier potted hist first-ever goal at Maple Leaf Gardens, solving Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan unassisted at 5:57 of the 2nd period. However, Humiliation spare Charlie Rishor (on loan from the Jokers) combined with Graeme McIntyre and Joe Cook for the tying tally just under two minutes later. John Pickernell put his side back on top shortly thereafter, finishing off a play involving Chartier and GSI defenceman Dave Bidini.

With an Islanders victory looking increasingly likely late in the 3rd period, though, Humiliation defenceman Duncan Bunclark stepped up to rain on the parade preparation, serving a dish prepared by teammates Paul Morris and Luke Moretti to spoil the appetite of netminder Matt Barber and knot the contest, and the final score, at 2-2.

Next up was the Hack H.C. (making their first UUHA appearance of the season) taking on the Parkdale Hockey Lads - a team still looking for its first win of the campaign. Hack forward Aaron Foster would make the Lads' search a little more challenging midway through the opening frame, capitalizing on a giveaway to skate the puck in and over undefended goaltender Luis Freitas. Hack asset Louis Durand would then make the 2nd period his figurative bitch, scoring a true natural hattrick (three consecutive, uninterrupted goals in the same period) with assists from Chris Barkley (2) and Neale Borutskic, putting the game effectively out of reach for the opposing side.

Lads forwards Terry Martins and Dave Ball would capitalize on 3rd period setup efforts from Mike Frolick and Jason Abrams to keep the score respectable, while the Hack's Wade Ivan (assisted by Durand) registered one more tally for the winners. Hack goaltender Aaron Brophey made 18 stops on the night, while Freitas turned aside 26 of of 31 attempts in the exhibition match.

Meanwhile, the Parkdale Porcupines fell to a decidedly improved Brockton Rockets squad upon the advent of the latter's season debut. Wayne Cochrane opened the scoring for the Porcupines at 9:08 of the 1st period, before being equaled by Brockton's Kiryl Nikifarau. Rockets men Mario Vella and Michael Wilcox then potted 2nd period goals for go-ahead honours. Despite a 3rd period push that saw the Quills get within one on the power-play, a late insurance marker by Nikifarau sealed the Rockets' victory.

The UUHA takes a two-week break due to a high school tournament at Upper Canada College and the Thanksgiving weekend, but will resume play on Saturday, Oct. 13 at UCC. That night's matches will see the Humiliation attempt to remain undefeated as they take on the Porcupines at 7:00 PM, while the Wheatfield Souldiers face off against the Lads at 8:00 PM. The final game of the evening pits the Jokers against the Gas Station Islanders.
