Islanders Offence Gasses Dufferin Groove Debut

TORONTO - The Gas Station Islanders demonstrated their formidable offensive depth this past Saturday evening as four different goal scorers combined to down the Dufferin Groove by a score of 4-1. The game represented the first-ever UUHA appearance by the Groove, and the first match between the two teams in over four years. (On Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 the Gas Station Islanders and Dufferin Groove skated to a 4-4 tie at McCormick Arena as part of the GTHLA's 2007/08 Regular Season.)

Groove sniper Todd Meaney got his side on the scoreboard first, converting a pass from call-up Julian Albrecht at the 3:50 mark of the opening period. However, GSI's Stephen Boyd responded five minutes into the 2nd frame for his first goal of the season. Klint Davies and Dominic Chartier would add the go-ahead and insurance goals (respectively) before the period was over. Despite an 11-shot outburst on the Groove's part, the only 3rd period scoring would be handled by GSI's Cam Collyer, who combined with Chartier to solve goaltender Heath Donaldson putting the game effectively out of reach for the visiting side.

GSI goaltender Matt Barber turned aside 22 of 23 shots for his second consecutive win.

The Dufferin Groove will have an opportunity to draw even with GSI early in the New Year when the teams face off again on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Upper Canada College. The Groove will next see UUHA action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they face off against the Wheatfield Souldiers. The Groove is scheduled to play 12 exhibition games over the course of the 2012/13 UUHA Regular Season, meeting each of the league's six full-time squads for a pair of games.

In other UUHA action this past Saturday night, the Humiliation doubled-up on the Jokers by a score of 4-2, joining GSI as the only other unbeaten team on the season. Mike Thompson had a pair of goals (and an assist) while Stephen Cribbin and Graeme McIntyre managed the other half of the winning side's scoring. Humiliation veteran Luke Moretti collected a couple assists, as well. Meanwhile, Jokers forwards Hunter Collins and Tyler Stewart tallied to keep things close. Stewart, who is enjoying one of the best starts of his rec-league career, currently sits atop the UUHA leader board with three goals in just two games. Versatile Jokers veteran Charlie Rishor enjoyed a multiple-point game, collecting assists on both of his team's goals.

And in the late game, the Parkdale Porcupines were victorious in the first round of this season's Battle of Parkdale, bettering the Parkdale Hockey Lads by a score of 3-1. Porcupines defenceman Adam Thrasher wasted little time in his long-awaited return to the Quills lineup, combining with speedster Todd Moffat to put the biscuit past Lads goaltender Luis Freitas just a minute-and-a-half into the game. Lads forward Simon Evers evened things up a few minutes later, however, perfectly converting a one-timer feed from linemate Kyle Welton to solve Porc's 'tender Dean Bentley. That was the only time the Lads would light the lamp on this night, though, as the Porcupines pulled away with 2nd period goals from sniper Brian Bentley and the youthful Ivan Kredl (with Wayne Cochrane assisting on both goals).

UUHA action continues next Saturday, Sept. 22 with a special series of games scheduled for the hallowed environs of Maple Leaf Gardens. The Jokers and Wheatfield Souldiers will kick off the four-game slate as they renew their friendly rivalry at 5:00 PM. As a tribute to the history of the hockey shrine, the teams will don the uniforms of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens for the occasion. The Humiliation and Gas Station Islanders are next up at 6:00 PM in what has shaped up as a battle between the league's only unbeaten teams on the season. The Lads will take on the Hack H.C. at 7:00 PM as the latter squad puts in its UUHA season debut (the first of six exhibition contests the team is scheduled for). And the night's final game will see the Brockton Rockets make their season debut up against the Parkdale Porcupines at 8:00 PM. Friends and family are heartily encouraged to come out to witness and celebrate the UUHA's first-ever foray onto the ice at the newly reopened Maple Leaf Gardens.
