Humiliation, Jokers, GSI Post Opening-Night Wins

TORONTO - The UUHA kicked off the 2012/13 Regular Season this past Saturday evening at Upper Canada College with the Humiliation, Jokers and Gas Station Islanders registering opening-night victories. Due to scheduled maintenance of the league's regular NHL-sized ice pad, the six full-time teams of the UUHA faced off against one another on the facility's neighbouring Olympic-sized rink.

The Humiliation and Parkdale Lads were first up on the evening's bill, renewing a longstanding rivalry now into its second decade. The Humiliation's Joe Cook earned the distinction of scoring the first goal of the new UUHA season, carrying in a feed from defenceman Graham Duncan and putting the rubber past Lads goalie Luis Freitas. Tommy Gough responded for the Lads just three minutes later, though, hooking up with linemates Kyle Welton and Dave Ball to solve Humiliations goaltender Chris Sanagan. Veteran Humiliation forward Nicos Fassler put his side back up by one with just 18 seconds remaining in the opening frame.

The Humiliation (sporting temporary "Who the fuck is Simon Evers?" crests over top of their usual logos) would tally midway through the 2nd period, this time off the stick of Luke Moretti. But the Lads managed to even things up thanks to an early 3rd period surge that saw former Humiliation forward Paul Simmons and rookie Ron Sherkin pot their first goals of the campaign. The knot, however, would be untied by Mike Thompson (combining again with Moretti and Stephen Cribbin, the latter of which collected a pair of assist on the night) and then fully unbraided by Cook's second tally of the game with just over a minute remaining in regulation.

Next up were the Jokers and Porcupines - two teams that finished on opposing ends of the previous year's Regular Season standings. Just two-and-a-half minutes into the game it appeared the Jokers may have their way with the Porcs, as forward Tyler Stewart combined with speedy linemates Mike Takacs and Steve Levine to bulge the twine behind goaltender Ian McKellar. But a concerted defensive effort on the part of the Quills, along with a superb series of saves by McKellar, managed to maintain a decidedly even playing surface throughout the game. Stewart and Takacs would ultimately combine for an additional pair of Jokers goals, while Porcupines sniper Brian Bentley would spoil goalie Burke Lawrence's shutout bid late in the 3rd period. Shots on net were recorded as 30-26 in favour of the winning side.

The Gas Station Islanders proved their 2011/12 Regular Season series victory over the Wheatfield Souldiers was no fluke, downing the reigning UUHA Champions by a 2-0 margin. Were it not for the addition of talented spare Josh Smart to the team's short bench, though, there's a good chance opening night might have witnessed the season's first scoreless contest. Smart scored the only two goals of the game unassisted, solving Souldiers goalie Sheldon Shurland midway through the 1st and 2nd frames. Matt Barber (between the GSI pipes while the team's injured veteran goalie Sean Markle looked on) put in a solid performance for the Isles, turning aside 25 shots (including an 11-shot 3rd period barrage) to claim the first shutout out the new season.

Next weekend's UUHA action sees the Jokers take on the Humiliation at 7:00 PM, while the Dufferin Groove make their league debut in an 8:00 PM exhibition tilt with the Gas Station Islanders. The Lads and Porcupines, meanwhile, will close out the night with the latest volley in the ongoing Battle of Parkdale at 9:00 PM.
