Rockets, GSI Post Wins While Lads, Souldiers Draw Even

TORONTO - The Brockton Rockets downed the Parkdale Porcupines 5-1 this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College, claiming 1st place in the UUHA standings in the process. The Gas Station Islanders also found the win column, defeating the Beau's Beer Hack 3-1 for their second consecutive victory. And the Parkdale Hockey Lads skated to a back-and-forth 4-4 draw with the Wheatfield Souldiers.

Michael Wilcox opened the scoring for the Rockets just a minute-or-so into the game, solving Porcupines goaltender Daniel Moriarity with the assistance of Dustin Harris and james Neilson. Those two would pot goal of their own before the 1st period was over, as would Richard Clarkin, making it a lopsided affair from the get-go. Oliver Sutherns made it 5-0 just two minutes into the 2nd frame, which is the way it would stay until the final minute of the game when Marc Hickox (on loan from the Jokers) finally got the Quills on the scoreboard, spoiling Brockton goaltender C.A. Magestry's shutout bid unassisted with just 32 seconds remaining on the clock.

The win propelled the Rockets up the league standings to 1st spot overall, where they share the same record as the Wheatfield Souldiers, but lead by a full point thanks to a pair of penalty-free games.

It was anything but a penalty-free game for the Souldiers this past saturday night as the team was called for four minors in the 1st period alone, leading to a pair of power-play goals for the Lads. A hard net-front pass from Kyle Welton caromed in off a Souldiers defender's skate for the first tally, while Mike Ryan combined with Welton for the other marker with the man advantage. Welton had the other 1st-period goal, as well, hooking up with Ian Seeton and Fernando Freitas to light the lamp behind Souldiers goalie Mike Wilk. Despite being shorthanded for the majority of the opening frame, though, the Souldiers managed to keep things close, answering the first three Lads goals in succession with a pair of tallies from the team's leading scorer, Eric Toth, and another by defenceman Keven Magura. The Souldiers (who managed to stay out of the penalty box for the 2nd and 3rd periods) then went ahead on an unassisted goal from Jimmy Murphy, before Lads veteran Mike Frolick corralled a fortuitous rebound off a Tommy Gough set-up attempt to knot things at 4-4.

Nick Purdon made good on scoring play involving Cam Collyer and Mike Gouz for the opening tally in the Gas Station Islanders' win over the struggling Beau's Beer Hack. Rob Yoshida made it 2-0 under a minute later (with Gouz assisting again) getting the puck past Hack tender Aaron Brophy for what would stand up as the game-winning goal. Lance Moreton halved the Hack deficit with just over four minutes remaining in the game, but veteran Gasser Rob Weir (playing his first GSI game in what seems an eternity) came through with an unassisted, empty-net insurance marker in the dying seconds, securing the Islanders' second straight win and getting the team back to .500 after a slow start to the season.

The UUHA season returns top action following the Thanksgiving weekend with the Souldiers and Jokers meeting at 7:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 14 at UCC, followed by the Islanders and Porcupines at 8:00 pm. The evening's slate of games will be capped off with the Rockets and Humiliation meeting at 9:00 pm.
