Lads Beat Hack, Rockets Burn Gassers and Jokers Post Second Straight Win

Lads forward Kyle Welton (above) is honoured with his team's "Hotshot" jersey following the team's 4-3 victory over the Hack this past Saturday night at UCC. TORONTO - Kyle Welton scored three times and spare goaltender Marc Hickox made 16 saves for the winning side as the Parkdale Hockey Lads eked out a 4-3 win over the Beau's Beer Hack this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. Ian Seeton had a goal and an assist for the Lads, while Don Lucey also set up a pair for the victors, whose record improved to 1-1-0 on the season which is currently good enough for 3rd place overall. Simon Evers and Nick Hehn were also credited with Lads assists, as were Blake McDonald and Lance Moreton for the Hack. Chris Cacciotti (1G,1A) and Louis Durand (2A) lead the Hack's offensive effort with multiple points on the night.

The Hack - who represented the cream of the UUHA crop just two seasons ago as the first team in league history to claim back-to-back championship titles - have yet to find the win column this season, going 0-1-1 after two weeks of play. They are not alone, however, as three other UUHA squads remain winless, including the Gas Station Islanders (0-2-0) and the Humiliation (0-1-1). The Parkdale Porcupines remain in pursuit of their first win as well, but have only played a single game and were off this past Saturday, along with the Wheatfield Souldiers (1-0-0). Those two teams meet at 7:00 pm this coming Saturday, Sept. 23 at UCC.

For their part, the Humiliation were in tough against the Jokers this past Saturday night after a blockbuster trade that saw Lads veteran Simon Evers and sniper Kyle Welton join the Jokers as spares, while that team's second-string goaltender, Marc Hickox, suited up for the Humiliation. The bizarre gambit appeared to pay early dividends for the Jokers, with the always-dangerous Steve Levine and formerly-dangerous Mike Takacs solving Hickox easily in the first frame, putting the Funniest Team on Ice ahead by an early pair. Cue the comeback, though, as Mike Thompson, Jimmy Sioukas and speedy, visor-averse spare Jeremiah Gonsalves potted three unanswered to put the Orange Tide ahead by a goal at the halfway point of the 3rd period. The lead was erased at the 4:17 mark, though, by Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion, who finished off a nifty play involving Takacs and the team's original Derek (Thompson, not Scott), going top corner to actually dislodge Hickox's water bottle. Three minutes later, with Hickox on the bench for the extra attacker, Levine combined with the Derek Thompson again to put the match effectively out of reach.

The night's final game saw the Brockton Rockets looking to avoid squandering a lead like the previous Saturday (which saw them blow a three-goal advantage to tie the Hack 4-4), while the Gas Station Islanders seeked out their first win of the season as well. The Rockets would get their way, though, painting a picture of consistency with a pair of goals in each of the three periods. GSI's Tim Vesely opened the scoring, though, making good on a power-play set-up by Dominic Chartier. But the Rockets would pot five unanswered goals by the time the Isles scored again at the 10:48 mark of the 3rd. The teams traded another goal each as the Brockton Boys skated to a decisive 6-3 win. Bryan Eelhart finished the game with 2 goals and 2 assists, while Dustin Harris (1G,2A), Michael Wilcox  (1G,1A) and James Neilson (1G,1A) all put in multiple-point performances, as well. Seth Singer also tallied for GSI, while Vesley scored his second of the game with just over a minute remaining on the clock.

GSI will have another opportunity to get their first win of the season this coming Saturday when they face off against the Jokers at 6:00 pm. The same goes for the Humiliation, who have drawn the Lads as their opponent for the 8:00 pm dance card.
