Game On: Puck Drops on 2017/18 UUHA Regular Season This Saturday, Sept. 9 at Upper Canada College

TORONTO - NHL'ers may not be participating in the Olympics next year, but all eight UUHA teams will be opening their season this coming Saturday, Sept. 9 on the Olympic-sized ice pad at Upper Canada College.

That means plenty of skating, particularly for players who may not have maintained their game or relative fitness level over the course of the summer. But fear no, o' flabby old timers, as the UUHA Board of Governors has, for the first time ever, enacted an optional "Rover" rule for the four opening-night games.

Named for the position commonly allowed by amateur and professional hockey leagues until the mid 1920, the Rover gave each side a seventh man (including the goaltender) on the ice, typically setting up as a centre defenseman but moving (or roving) wherever the play took him or her. Given the extra width of the Olympic ice surface, and the fact many players would be strapping one their skates for the first time in months, members of the UUHA's BoG decided to afford teams the option of mutually agreeing to use a Rover for opening-day games. It is not known whether any teams will elect to do so.

What is known is that the opening-day games slate will kick off at 6:30 pm with a rematch of last season's dramatic Bronze Medal Game between the Beau's Beer Hack and the Brockton Rockets. That match saw two scoreless periods transpire between the previous year's champions and the inspired Rockets, before the Hack potted a pair of quick 3rd-period goals for a 2-0 lead. The Rockets rallied with a pair of their own, though, forcing a game-deciding shootout which went in their favour (Mike Pett was credited with the game-winning tally).

Saturday's 7:30 pm game will see a rematch of last season's Championship Final, which saw the Wheatfield Souldiers defeat the Gas Station Islander 3-0 on route to capturing a league-record 4th title. Eric Toth, Brad Sveistrup and Mike Harkness scored the tree Souldiers goals and all three are expected to be on hand for Saturday's game, as well as goaltender Sheldon Shurland.

Also this Saturday evening, the Parkdale Hockey Lads and Jokers Hockey Club will renew friendly rivalries at 8:30 pm (the two squads met in last season's Consolation Final, with the Funniest Team on Ice bettering the Lads 6-2), while the Humiliation is scheduled to take on the Parkdale Porcupines at 9:30 pm.

The four season-opening match-ups will repeat three times over the course of the 2017/18 UUHA Regular Season, representing one of two three-game-series on each teams' calendar. Each team will also face another opponent three times, with the remainder of teams scheduled for just a pair of meetings prior to the playoffs. Last season saw all eight full-time UUHA squads play each other twice, as well as taking part in a pair of exhibition games. There are currently no exhibition games for this season.

The 2017/18 UUHA Regular Season is scheduled to wrap up Saturday, February 17 with a full slate of four matches at Maple Leaf Gardens. The 2018 UUHA Playoffs are expected to commence the following Saturday, Feb. 24 at UCC, continuing through to Saturday, April 7, 2018.
