TORONTO - Josh Smart, Corbin Smith and goaltender Luke Smit likely made the difference in the final instalment of the UUHA's 2017 Summer Series at Maple Leaf Gardens. The game, which took place Friday, Aug. 18 at the iconic Carleton Street hockey shrine, was played over the course of two hours and featured various players from the Jokers Hockey Club, as well as representatives of a handful of other UUHA and GTHLA teams. The final score was 12-9 in favour of the dark side.
Jive Turkeys veteran Smart finished the night with 4 goals and 3 assists, while teammate Smith set up three goals while concentrating on shutting the white side down with consistently tight defensive play. Smit, who regularly tends goal for both the Flying Burritos and the Humiliation, edged cross-ice counterpart Gary Emanuel, while accepting a measure of help from the Gardens' vinyl goaltending device, which was stretched into service for the majority of the 1st period as the dark side awaited Smit's arrival.
Jokers forward Steve Chamberlain tallied three times (including two goals on the surprisingly good vinyl keeper), while Wheatfield Souldier Bob Lavery also claimed a hat-trick. The pair was also credited with 3 assists each in the co-ed contest. Most of the GTHLA players were regulars at the Gardens' Friday night 9:00 pm ice time, while the Jokers (and other UUHA skaters) has been playing throughout the summer at 8:00 pm. The two groups opted to combine their ice times for what was to be the final UUHA session of the summer.
In terms of final Summer Series standings, the Imperials finished with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss, defeating Team Impact!, the Brockton Rockets and Wheatfield Souldiers by close margins, but dropping one contest to the Screamin' Jays. The Souldiers, meanwhile, won just a single match (against the Jokers) while going down to defeat at the gloves of the Imps and Screamin' Jays. The Razorbacks and Porcupines both claimed victories in their Summer Series games, as well.
