TORONTO - Despite outshooting their opponent 20-16 this past Friday evening at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Jokers Hockey Club dropped the first of four MLG Summer Series contests vs. the Wheatfield Souldiers by a 6-2 margin. The reigning UUHA Champions struck early and often, solving Jokers goaltender Burke Lawrence on three separate occasions in the 1st period. The Souldiers made it 5-0 before veteran Joker Adrian Cavan got his side on the board at the 4:56 mark of the 2nd period, converting a feed from Marc Hickox to beat Wheatfield goalie Sheldon Shurland with a hard shot along the ice. Souldiers defenceman Keven Magura potted another early in the final frame (for his second goal of the game) before Jokers call-up Jake Hughson doubled his side's scoring with the assistance of Cavan and captain Ted Bisaillion. The game represented the junior Hughson's debut with the Funniest Team on Ice, which his father, Craig Hughson, has been a member of for several seasons.
In addition to Magura's pair or tallies, Souldiers forwards Jon Weier, Eric Toth (2) and Mike Harkness also lit the lamp for the winning side, while Joey Serlin (2), Brad Sveistrup, Steve Harkness, Toth (2) and Bob Lavery were credited with assists.
The next MLG Summer Series action takes place Friday, July 7 with the Imperials facing off against the Screamin' Jays at 8:00 pm sharp. The Jokers are next scheduled to play Friday, July 21 when they will take on the Parkdale Porcupines. Friday, July 14 represents the next Souldiers action at the Gardens, when they will take to the ice against Team Impulse.
