TORONTO - The Imperials Hockey Club posted a 5-2 victory over Team Impulse this past Friday night at Maple Leaf Gardens, kicking off the 2017 edition of the UUHA Summer Series at the hallowed hockey shrine. The game was the first of nine Summer Series matches scheduled for MLG, the next one taking place on Friday, June 30. The Jokers Hockey Club, Wheatfield Souldiers, Brockton Rockets and Parkdale Porcupines are all expected to participate in the Summer Series, the full schedule of which is currently being determined.
John Grande opened the scoring for the Imps, potting the first of three unanswered 1st-period goals with the assistance of Mike Frolick and Derek Latulippe. Daniel Bach and Simon Milbury got the other two goals. The 2nd period, however, belonged to Team Impulse, as Brian Bentley and Mike Harkness both scored to get their side within one of their black-shirted opponents. A penalty shot opportunity for Rodney Merchant held the promise of a tying tally, but the puck rolled awkwardly off of Merchant's stick at the last moment and preserving the Imperials' lead. Frolick and Mike Ryan would add a pair of insurance markers in the final frame, as the crisp-passing Imperials skated to their first victory of the summer.
Goaltender Marc Hickox backstopped the Imps' win while Christine McBride, despite the loss, turned in a solid performance for Team Impulse. Tim Vesely and Merchant were credited with assists for Team Impulse, while Milbury, Latulippe and Donal Lucey picked up helpers for the Imps.
