Humiliation, GSI, Souldiers Close Out Regular Season With Wins

TORONTO - The Wheatfield Souldiers, Gas Station Islanders and Humiliation each capped off winning seasons this past Saturday night with victories over the Parkdale Lads, Jokers and Porcupines, respectively.
With a short bench augmented by three members of the first-place Jokers, the Humiliation (9-6-3) had a relatively easy time handling the Porcupines (4-14-0), ultimately defeating the last-place squad by a score of 4-1. Stephen Cribbin and Joe Cook contributed a goal each for the winning side with the balance of scoring coming from spares Craig Hughson and Ted Bisaillion. (Cribbin, who also collected an assist on the final goal of the contest, was awarded the game's 1st Star honours.) Todd Moffat potted the loan goal for the Porcupines, bringing his regular-season goals total to eight.
The Wheatfield Souldiers (10-3-5) were first on the board in their final regular-season match-up with the Parkdale Lads (6-10-2) as Derek Domingos collected the fourth goal of his rookie campaign, roofing a shot behind spare goaltender Luke Smit at the 9:46 mark of the opening frame. Lads forward Mike Ryan evened things up just three minutes later, deflecting a hard shot up off of the arm of Souldiers goalie Sheldon Shurland and just inside the cross bar. However, Kelly McCaig would restore the Souldiers' lead in the final minute of the 1st period, skating in an intercepted pass for the unassisted tally. Domingos stepped up again in the 3rd period, this time converting an insurance marker from McCaig and Keven Magura. Shortly thereafter, Lads leading goal getter Kyle Welton got his side back within one, but the remaining 5:55 produced no further scoring.
The night's only outcome that might have been considered an upset, however, was GSI's 4-1 win over the 1st place Jokers. Tim Vesely, Steve Boyd. Kevin Lacroix and Dominic Chartier all contributed goals for the Islanders (10-6-2), while Gary Rideout tallied on the power play for the Jokers (11-5-2).
Despite the loss, the Jokers (who were playing without their two leading scorers, Steve Levine and Mike Takacs) still managed to finish the Regular Season on top of the UUHA standings. Accordingly, the Jokers' first-round Playoff opponent will be the Porcupines, who came in last among the league's six teams. The other first-round Playoff dance cards will see the Humiliation take on the Lads, while the Souldiers go up against the Islanders.
Contrary to appearances in the Regular Season standings on the UUHA web site, the Humiliation managed to better the Souldiers by a half point after Playoff ranking adjustments were applied to each teams' Regular Season points totals. Those adjustments entailed the removal of all points accrued in games played against Exhibition teams such as the Brockton Rockets, Hack and Flying Burritos. The final post-adjustment regular-season standings are as follows:
1st Place: Jokers Hockey Club (21.5 pts.)
2nd Place: Humiliation (20 pts.)
3rd Place: Wheatfield Souldiers (19.5 pts.)
4th Place: Gas Station Islanders (18 pts.)
5th Place: Parkdale Hockey Lads (12 pts.)
6th Place: Parkdale Porcupines (5.5 pts.)
The first round of the 2012 UUHA Playoffs commence Saturday, March 3 at Upper Canada College with the Islanders and Souldiers taking to the ice at 7:00 PM. The 8:00 PM contest will feature the Jokers and Porcupines, while the final game of the night will see the Lads attempt to better the Humiliation at 9:00 PM.
Winners of this coming weekend's games will compete in round-robin play (two games each) the following Saturday, March 10. Meanwhile, the three teams emerging on the losing end of this coming Saturday's games will face one another round-robin styles on Saturday, March 17. The outcomes of the two round-robin series will determine the semi-final match-ups scheduled for Saturday, March 24. The UUHA Championship Final, Bronze Medal Game and Relegation Final will take place on Saturday, March 31. All UUHA Playoff games will take place at UCC at either 7:00., 8:00 or 9:00 PM. Check the March game schedule for more details, including specific Playoff match-ups as they become available.
