GSI Routs Porcs While Lads & Jokers, Souldiers & Humiliation Tie

TORONTO - Players arriving for last Saturday's 8:00 pm UUHA contest at Upper Canada College could be forgiven for assuming the Jokers were responsible for the 3-0 lead registered on the scoreboard. However, it was the Parkdale Lads who were enjoying a three-goal lead by the end of the 1st period, thanks to a pair of tallies by red-hot Lads forward Tommy Gough, as well as a marker from defensive spare Kevin Lacroix (on loan from the Gas Station Islanders). Gough has amassed a nifty six points (4G, 2A) in the past two Lads matches, moving into second spot in the team's regular season scoring race in the process.  Lads sniper Kyle Welton would make it a 4-0 lead at the 12:49 mark of the 2nd period, picking off an errant Jokers pass and skating it in unassisted for his 15th goal of the season.

The Lads (6-9-2) would have difficulty maintaining the impressive margin, though, as the Jokers (11-4-2) registered three straight 2nd period goals, two from the stick of Mike Takacs and a single from Steve Chamberlain. Lads rookie Dave Ball would provide the figurative finger for the dike, potting his first goal of the season with four minutes remaining in the period. But it was the Jokers who would get the last laugh, registering a pair of unanswered 3rd period goals including a power-play marker by the team's leading scorer Steve Levine, and a game-tying goal from devilishly handsome Jokers captain Ted Bisaillion.

The game represented the last regular season meeting between the two teams who, despite being far removed in the overall standings, closed out their series dead even with a 1-1-1 mutual record.

The Gas Station Islanders (9-6-2) potted a pair in each of the first two periods, then another in the 3rd frame en route to a 5-0 blanking of the Parkdale Porcupines (4-13-0). George Collins opened the scoring early in the 1st period, converting a pass from linemate Dominic Chartier. (Collins would finish the night with three points - a goal and two assists - along with 2nd Star of the Game honours.) Klint Davies picked up his 11th and 12th goals of the regular season, while Kevin Lacroix tallied shorthanded with Collins in the penalty box. Tim Vesely would net an additional insurance marker on the power play with under four minutes remaining in the game as Isles goaltender Sean Markle registered his league-leading fifth shutout of the season.

Meanwhile, the Humiliation and Wheatfield Souldiers skated to their second draw of the season in a game that saw the Souldiers (9-3-5) pull out to a 2-0 lead before being equaled, then bettered on the scoreboard. Souldiers forward Kelly McCaig opened the scoring in the final minute of the 1st period, stripping an opposing player of the puck then skating it in for the unassisted shorthanded tally. Next to strike was Brad Sveistrup, converting a passing play from Mike Wilk and Mike Harkness at the 10:41 mark of the 2nd period for his seventh goal of the season. The Humiliation's Joe Cook and Mike Thompson answered back before the end of the period, though, registering a pair of goals within 51 seconds to knot things up. Paul Morris would put the Orange Tide ahead midway through the 3rd, making good on a set-up from Clint Whitworth and Eric Partington to put the Humiliation (8-6-3) up 3-2. But just over three minutes later, Sveistrup struck again, this time with a sweeping wraparound effort that beat Humiliation goaltender Luke Smit by mere centimeters.

The 2012 UUHA Regular Season wraps up this coming Saturday, Feb. 25 with the Humiliation facing off against the Porcupines at 7:00 pm, the Gas Station Islanders taking on the Jokers at 8:00 and the Lads and Wheatfield Souldiers going head-to-head in the late game (9:00 pm) in what promises to be a dress rehearsal of the two teams' first-round Playoff match-up.
