Humiliation Pumps Gas Station, Lads Exit Basement

TORONTO - The Humiliation wrapped up its three-game season series with the Gas Station Islanders this past Saturday night posting a third consecutive victory over GSI in the process. The 5-2 game also represented the third straight win for the streaking Humiliation (8-4-2) who, over their past three contests, have outscored their opponents by a generous margin of 15-4. Though currently in 3rd place in the UUHA standings, the team sits just one point back of the Jokers and Wheatfield Souldiers. Both of those teams are currently tied for 1st place with 20.5 regular-season points.

For the Islanders (6-6-2), the loss entailed one slight silver lining in that they managed to light the lamp behind the Humiliation goal, twice at that. Their two previous games versus the Orange Tide ended without a single GSI goal registered on the game sheet. This time, however, defenceman Kevin Lacroix and forward George Collins both solved league-leading goaltender Sheldon Shurland, who was on loan from the Souldiers as a spare for the occasion. Lacroix scored unassisted after intercepting an errant pass in the neutral zone, looping around the Humiliation net and taking advantage of a crease-front screen. Nick Purdon and Don Kerr collected assists on Collins' tally midway through the 3rd period.

Humiliation scoring was handled by Paul Aucoin, Mike Thompson, Mark Simmons and Mark Sanagan, the latter of whom registered his fifth and sixth goals of the season. Aucoin, Eric Partington, Paul Morris, Kelly Dutton, Mike Craig and Joe Cook were credited with helpers.

Despite a late surge by an improved Parkdale Porcupines side, the struggling Parkdale Hockey Lads held on for their first victory of 2012, bettering their neighborhood rivals by a score of 3-2. Porcupines forward Wayne Cochrane got his squad on the board first, teaming up with Todd Moffatt and spare defenceman Kevin Magura just four-and-a-half minutes into the game. The Lads drew even about a minute later, though, catching a lucky break when a net-front passing play caromed off of an opponent's skate and past Porcs goalie Dean Bentley. (Kyle Welton was credited with the goal, being the last Lad to have touched the puck.) A hard slapshot from defenceman Lorne Kredl solved Lads goalie Tony Lanz midway through the 2nd frame, putting the Quills on top once more. But that lead was shortlived as well, with Lads second-leading scorer Mike Frolick closing the gap less than a minute later, jumping on an uncleared rebound in front of an open Porcupines net. Lads forward Mike Ryan gave his team its first lead of the game at the 1:38 mark of the 2nd, scoring what would hold up as the game-winning final goal of the contest.

Nick Hehn, Fabian Ruzic, Tommy Gough, Welton and Fil Freitas garnered assists for the Lads. Porcupines spare Elias Vastis also registered a helper. With the win, the Lads improved to 4-8-1 on the season, vacating the basement spot in the standings in the process. That dubious subterranean distinction now belongs to the Porcupines (3-11-0) who currently sit 1.5 points behind their Parkdale rivals.

Meanwhile, in UUHA exhibition action the Wheatfield Souldiers (8-2-4) bettered a short-benched Flying Burritos side to the tune of 7-1. Burritos spare Joe Cook (on loan from the Humiliation) combined with Paul Aucoin for their squad's lone goal, while Chuck Molgat, Eric Toth, Brad Sveistrup, Steve Harkness, Jimmy Murphy, Rob Zifarelli and Rodney Merchant tallied for the Souldiers. Merchant's goal represented the defenceman's first assist of the season, allowing him to shed the distinction as the only player on the Souldiers roster without a single point to his credit.

UUHA Regular Season action resumes at 7:00 pm this coming Saturday, Jan. 28 with the Souldiers taking on the Jokers (9-4-0) for top honours in the standings. The Lads go up against the Gas Station Islanders at 8:00 pm while the Porcupines are set to face off against the Brockton Rockets at 9:00 pm.
