Souldiers Fire Blanks as GSI, Jokers, Humiliation Skate to Victory

TORONTO - Sniper Dominic Chartier potted the only two goals of the game as the Gas Station Islanders blanked the Wheatfield Souldiers this past Saturday night at Upper Canada College. With the win, GSI (6-5-2) get the better of the three-game season series between the two teams, registering the lone victory after two consecutive tie games. The game also represented the first time the Souldiers (7-2-4) have been held off the scoreboard this season. GSI winger Seth Singer registered the game's only assist, while goaltender Sean Markle collected his league-leading third shutout of the season.

Prior to Saturday's contest, Chartier had been unable to solve league-leading Souldiers goaltender Sheldon Shurland - one of the few (if not only) UUHA goalies to have stymied the Isles' leading scorer on a routine basis. Chartier's goals also saw him draw even in the league's scoring race with Souldiers offensive threat Eric Toth. Both players currently share second spot on the UUHA leader board with 20 points - six back of net-bulging Jokers phenom Steve Levine.

Levine, meanwhile, picked up 1st Star honours in his team's successful bout with the Parkdale Porcupines on Saturday night. The speedy centreman set up linemate Steve Chamberlain for the game's second goal, then converted a pass from Jokers defenceman Craig Hughson for the third tally of the game. The Jokers (9-4-0) added one more early in the final frame when Hunter Collins hooked one up with Sean Cullen and Pete Windrem assisting, but the Porcupines (3-10-0) were not done yet. The consistently improving expansion squad turned the momentum around for the balance of the 3rd period, putting a pair of pucks past Burke Lawrence within a span of 20 seconds to draw within a single point of their league-leading opponent.

Mike Takacs was the other Jokers goal scorer, with Hughson and Derek Thompson assisting. Ryan Urquhart, James Walker and Todd Moffat scored for the Porcupines, while Ivan Kredl, Brian Bentley, Moffat and Walker all collected helpers.

Meanwhile, the Humiliation (7-4-2) went from the win column to the big-win column, opening up a 6-1 can over the Flying Burritos in UUHA exhibition play. Making his return after missing three games with an upper-body injury, Humiliation GM Stephen Cribbin registered an assist in the veritable blowout which also saw forwards Paul Morris and Joe Cook each pick up two goals and one assist. Eric Partington and Mark Sanagan tallied for the winning side, as well, while Steve Richardson was the lone goal scorer for the Burritos, spoiling Humiliation goaltender Chris Sanagan's shutout bid with just 2:46 remaining in the game. In one of the game's more interesting storylines, Paul Aucoin opted to play with the Burritos despite the fact he is also a member of the Humiliation. Though less effective than the bookmakers may have expected him to be, Aucoin did collect an assist on the Richardson goal, along with teammate Ron Kuipers.

With the win, the Humiliation moves to within a single point of the second-place Wheatfield Souldiers, and just three points back of the league-leading Jokers. The three teams are all scheduled to meet once more before the regular season wraps up at the end of February.

UUHA action resumes this Saturday, Jan. 21 with the Wheatfield Souldiers taking on the exhibition Flying Burritos at 7:00 pm. Despite having failed to score a single goal in their previous two meetings, the Gas Station Islanders will attempt to put a winning streak together as they go up against the Humiliation at 8:00 pm. And in the evening's final game, the well-rested Parkdale Hockey Lads (3-8-1) will attempt to vacate the musty UUHA basement as they face off against the Parkdale Porcupines at 9:00 pm.
